This Open Thread Is Going To Be (Partially) About Change

I know some of you are freaking out a little about the new design. So am I! Changing the website is a little like when I move around the furniture in my apartment and then keep bumping into a table when I am getting up to pee at night. But to continue that metaphor, sometimes I also do this thing where I lean my head and shoulders back over the edge of my bed so that I can see what's so nice about my room/life, if I have been in a mode of focusing on the negative. So I aim to look at this site and community from an inverted perspective also. If that makes any sense, which I'm not sure it does.

OR, as Olivia just texted me: "It's all about making the wrong place, the new right place." So maybe we can work on that together.

There are things I really like about the site, like that all of our contributors' smiling faces are so much BIGGER on the homepage. A bunch of you (including my mom) have said you like the look of the site better now, too. There are some things that I want to update. For instance, the bummer with the "Jane Tracker" thing is not that you guys can "track" me, but that it runs so big in the main scroll bumping down all the other more important stories I want you to read AND doesn't provide (my favorite thing) a regular place for you and me to just talk, in the (sometimes rambling) way that we did in the comments sections of my old Jane's Phone entries. I don't want to TELL you what I'm doing. I want to ASK you what you're doing and how you FEEL about what you're doing and how we can help each other to do what we're NOT doing and what you think it all means and all of that crap.

So what do you like and dislike about this five-day-old site design and what do you want us to change? Kind engineering folks Dave, Nicole, James, Aida, Kevin and Smith, who are as obsessed as I am with making you happy, are going to be in here some with me listening to you and maybe answering the kinds of questions I would have no idea how to answer. I will be around the comments here too, as usual (unless I go to my 6:30 yoga class -- should I go? -- in which case, I will be back here by about 8:30).

Or maybe you don't care to talk about the site and would rather talk about these things:

  • How many apps on your phone do you actually use?
  • Have you figured out your Halloween costume yet?
  • What great old song have you recently discovered?
  • What type of headphones do you use?
  • What is your favorite fast-food restaurant?

You can, of course, in the future, always skip what I have to say and click on the green speech bubble on the right that takes you to the comments where you can start talking about whatever you'd like, because I love best when you talk about whatever you so please. So please do!

PS Having these sweet techy folks wading into our comment marsh here reminds me of that brilliant Test Victor moment of however long ago, which could serve as a marker of how long someone has been part of this community. So if you feel like identifying whether or not you recall the brilliant Test Victor, I will have a sense of how attached to (or sick of) our old format you may have been. ALL HAIL TEST VICTOR.
