YOU ARE THE ADVICE COLUMNIST: How Do I Get A Job When I'm Overqualified?

I need a job to pay the bills, but I'm not getting any interviews and I think it's because I'm seen as overqualified.

I have a PhD in the social sciences. I had to take short-term disability for clinical depression, and was promptly let go by my employer when I returned to work. I need a job to pay the bills, but I'm not getting any interviews and I think it's because I'm seen as overqualified. i'm not getting call backs from temp agencies, nor interviews for research assistant type positions that pay as well as my last job and that I would actually find to be a good fit at this point. What can I do?
