I really couldn’t care less about dressing up for Halloween, despite George’s best efforts to persuade me that this is the greatest time of year for freaks and geeks. HOWEVER I love the fact that this holiday gives me the opportunity to share with you some of my favourite dark, disturbing tracks. Let’s go gothgothGOTH!
Oh what’s that? You want a spooky video with lots of dry ice and some stuff to do with the Salem witch trials and clips from awesome B-movies PLUS Iron Maiden killing it like only they can? VOILA! (This one’s especially for Cat Marnell who’s Halloween-themed post from this time last year was named after this track and is one of her best.)
You can always rely on Siouxie and her Banshees to deliver a video featuring a girl wearing high-waisted trousers running through some damp English forest, evoking an awesomely depressing atmosphere.
The Sisters of Mercy are gloriously, unapologetically camp in this clip (I especially love the way bassist Patricia Morrison just sort of wanders aimlessly around in the background with her fabulous hair.)
Let me take you back to Reading Festival in 1997. It was dark and rainy, I'd lost my friends and Marilyn Manson were on the main stage playing The Beautiful People. I was terrified out of my tiny mind. Those throbbing, tribal drums and the manic 'ooo-aaahhhh!!!' bit still freak me out.
Oh come on, you didn't seriously expect me to miss out Danzig did you? He's fit, it's a spooky song, I rest my case.
Now this list is clearly by no means comprehensive - I could also have included anything by Vixen, The Smiths' Cemetry Gates, some Kate Bush, a spot of Stevie Nicks, maybe some Dead Can Dance and of course Type O Negative - Black No.1.
UPDATE: Look what the lovely Kate Nash released for Halloween - her new song, FRI-END? which you can download for free from her website right here!
So tell me, what would be on your Halloween mixtape? We just created a SPOTIFY PLAYLIST so tell us and we'll add them in!
