Your place to come talk about clothes whenever you feel like it.
Candy has had only eight issues, and can already count Lady Gaga, Tilda Swinton, Jared Leto, and James Franco amongst its past cover stars. Pretty impressive for “the first transversal style magazine” born in 2009.
But the biannual glossy’s new 5th anniversary issue might be its greatest achievement yet, despite none of the cover stars being Franco-famous. What they all are is transgender. The gatefold cover includes a whopping 14 trans women, including Laverne Cox, Geena Rocero, Carmen Carrera, and Janet Mock.
In an exclusive interview with Style.com, founder Luis Venegas says the shoot was in part inspired by Vanity Fair‘s Hollywood issue. “It’s the first time such a large number of trans women have been featured on the cover of a magazine. Is it too daring to say that we’ve made history? Time will tell.”
True, though the current timing feels perfect. 2014 has been a hugely significant one in terms of trans-acceptance in mainstream pop culture (though we still obviously have a long way to go.) Cox has also made a Time cover, and Mock was named a contributing editor at Marie Clairein July.
