Q: Who am I 'channelling' today? A: Jessica Fletcher!

I wish I looked as natural in my clothes as Jessica Fletcher does in hers - nothing looks too big or too tight, too dressy or too casual, she's always supremely herself. Sigh...

Quintissential Jessica; jumper knotted casually over her shoulders and preppy striped shirt (styled against her gorgeous New England kitchen which I WANT.)

No-one does ‘middle-aged American lady leisurewear’ better than the great sleuth. Whether she's trailing murderers or hassling lazy police detectives, she always looks comfortable and confident in her matching skirt suits, sensible beige slacks and low-heeled court shoes [not that this is entirely relevant, but my cousin had a dog named Jessica after Jessica Fletcher --Rebecca]. Oh how I envy her smart purses, swinging jauntily from her shoulder in patent red or classic brown.

Note how she accessorises her magnifying glass with a chic silk scarf and fabulous costume jewellery - take that Sherlock.

She has a brilliant repertoire of mackintoshes (always chicly belted) and car coats and an endless collection of clip-on earrings - not Pat Butcher big, but not dainty either. And always, always American tan tights. She can glam up for cocktail parties (and catch a gent's eye!) or go 'undercover' in a sweater, slacks and running shoes with ease. I wish I looked as natural in my clothes as Jessica Fletcher does in hers - nothing looks too big or too tight, too dressy or too casual, she's always supremely herself. Sigh...

A pastel car coat and beige slacks work in any situation

In an effort to emulate the lady detective, today I am wearing: Gap chinos (a traditional American brand! they are beige!) with sensible kitten heels from M&S which are incredibly comfortable thanks to a fancy insole and mean I can chase down villains with ease. They are also snakeskin-patterned, which is cool. A preppy button down Oxford shirt from Uniqlo worn with a nice cashmere sweater by Luella (in beige to match the slacks) completes the look.

Note the sensible slacks, mid-height heels, jaunty 'kerchief and quizzical 'sleuthing' expression

Later in the day I might wear the jumper casually knotted around my shoulders. Jessica always has just the right number of accessories – never over the top, but nicely completing her outfits. I added a silk scarf, tucked inside the shirt’s collar for that classy ‘70s mom’ effect, matching plastic earrings which resemble soft mints and I topped it all off with my APC anorak. This, for me is the modern equivalent of Jess’s car coat. I also have a classic Burberry trench, but that’s for days when I’m channelling Lieutenant Columbo.
