It's In My Closet, Now How Do I Wear It?: The Fringed Dress

Samantha was gifted this dress a few years back, and has only worn it for the Halloween she was a sexy flapper vampire (of course).

Hey Laia,

I was gifted this dress a few years back, and I've only worn it once on Halloween when I was a sexy flapper vampire. The straps are a faded black jersey, but the body is black velvet and from the knee down is black fringe. I have no idea where I should wear this dress or what to accessorize with it. All I know is that I have to wear really high heels so I don't step on the long fringe.

Please help.

Hey Samantha, thanks for writing! I think this one is a bit of a toughie. The fact that you've only worn it as a Halloween costume (without much customizing) is giving me pause about its real-life potential.  As to where you could wear this? This will really depend on how you approach it.

At first, I immediately thought "combat boots (or sky high wedges), a white tee over it and denim jacket on top," you know, in the style of all the NYC hip girls that worship at the altar of Alexander Wang. If that's not really something you're comfortable with then perhaps you'd be into cutting off the fringe and keeping it as a classic black shift dress (though it would be a shame to lose the dancing star-power fringe brings!).

Other than that, I think this dress could only come out at Halloween events. The secret to incorporating this into your everyday wear is to sort of subvert the obvious references of the dress and go as far in the opposite direction as you can.

Let me know how it works out!

The Result?

So good! Insanely luxurious and yet so carefree! I hope you wear this all the time.
