How to Wear a Cape Just About Anywhere

Why the poncho is the ultimate comfy-chic item that you can wear to work, out for a night, and then to brunch, too.

The problem with buying into trends is that they never last -- every season I have at least five (if not more) items that I bought solely on the fact that my girlfriends convinced me it was good idea, and it never is.

But this season, I got lucky! Because what's in now happens to be super comfy and a closet staple: ponchos and capes. They were a favorite at the Burberry Spring 2015 show, and then once I saw Olivia Palermo rocking a cape and knee-high boots, I knew I had to try one. Wearing one is like wearing a blanket outside of the house, and they are really versatile.

So I bought this Multi-stripe cape for $68, a good price-point for a statement item. What made me go for it versus other options first was the color pattern: Its earthy tones are perfect for fall, and I can already see myself wearing it so many different ways! I’ve worn it to work a few times with a leather pencil skirt and cropped sweater, and when I need to just go to the grocery store or run an errand it’s by far the most convenient piece to grab and go. It’s a warm acrylic, and not too thick, so I can layer with ease. I chose to wear it today with a dark denim and a burgundy American Apparel sweatshirt. Inspired by my newfound love, here are four other options you could wear for other occasions.

WORK

Elevate this cool, neutral cape for work with a bold lipstick shade and heels. I especially like the short sleeves and (what you can't see) draping in the back.

NIGHT OUT

Leather and tassels? Always a yes. Made from wool with real leather tassels, this cape works well with skinny jeans, ankle boots and a top for a night out. I could also see this paired with a minidress and platforms.

BRUNCH

I’m always searching for something that’s comfortable and that can be thrown on over a T-shirt and jeans and look put together. This wool cape is the closest I could ever get to that. It’s got a sturdy shape, so you can layer with anything underneath, and hits below the waistline.

CASUAL/COMMUTER

For all the print-lovers out there, check out the Aztec-inspired design on this cape! I'm picturing it with slouchy boyfriend jeans and slip-on sneakers.
