It's gonna get sappy up in here.
The people have spoken and they have decided that Marilyn Monroe has the most iconic hairstyle of the last 100 years. And by people, I mean the 3500 hairstylists, Facebook followers and customers who voted in the Cool Blades poll –- the results were announced earlier this week.
There’s no doubt Marilyn is one of the most iconic beauties in history, but I’ll admit, I’m surprised that she’s nabbed the number one spot in a survey that’s just about hair. I think of her entire look as iconic, but if we’re only talking about a hairdo, I would’ve voted Audrey Hepburn and her “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” style (which came in third) as the winner. Cher’s long, straight hair from the 1960s was number two, and rounding out the top five is Diana Ross's Afro, #4, and Farrah Fawcett and her feathered hair landed in fifth place. Check out the complete list with pictures here.
Of course, most of the women you would expect made it onto the rest of the Cool Blades lineup like Grace Jones (#6), Jennifer Aniston (#9), Halle Berry (#12) and even Lady Gaga and her hair bow (#16). But I raised an eyebrow at a few of the choices -- I don't know if Beyoncé's wet, textured bob from the Grammys are quite worthy and how on earth did Jennifer Lopez NOT make the cut? Her honey-colored, perfectly waved hair may not be the most exciting style, but I think it's one of the most copied. (See: Beyoncé, Mariah Carey, Lauren Conrad, Sofia Vergara and most of Hollywood).
But that's the thing about lists like these -- there are always questionable inclusions and glaring omissions depending on who you ask. Most of the women on the Cool Blades list are iconic for sure, but when I think of my own personal hair icons, there are a few that come to mind. And actually, even without their kick-ass hair, I find them to be incredibly unique and captivating. These are my top three:
1. Solange Knowles's Afro. I had natural hair for seven years before I went back to a relaxer and whenever I see all of the different ways Solange wears her Afro, it almost makes me wanna go back to old ways. She's worn a massive 'fro like Diana Ross and she's gone with a more demure version with shorter sides and more length on the top -- both looks are winners. I'm even feeling the pyramid-shaped style she's flaunting in the new issue of Harper's Bazaar. It's not necessarily practical for real life, but she's wearing the hell out of it. Love!
2. Tilda Swinton's androgynous haircut. I've mentioned my Tilda obsession before and this won't be the last time you hear me talk about her. My god, this woman is gorgeous. Is she even from this planet? And the blonde, cropped hair that's become her signature, fits her delicate facial shape perfectly. As much as I love Miley Cyrus's boy cut, it doesn't even come close to this. Tilda FTW!
3. Sade's sleek ponytail. She is one of the most timeless, elegant creatures out there, but she stays so off the radar, that nobody ever mentions her. Sade's whole beauty look is classic (the red lips, the hoop earrings), but I love that she's stuck with her tight, low pony for all these years. So simple yet so sexy.
Now you go. Which celebs do YOU think have the most iconic hair out there? Do you agree with the top 18 picks on the Cool Blades list?
