Before moving to Massachusetts this winter, I lived in the Deep South for nearly eight years. When you leave a place you've lived in for a long time, you begin to deeply miss all the things you didn't realize you had been taking for granted for so long.

For instance, I started crying in a grocery store the other day because it hit me that I just can't have really amazing fried chicken whenever I want anymore. My grocery store in Jackson, Mississippi, had the best fried chicken. (Miss you, McDade's.) That fried chicken got me through some tough times, okay?

Right behind fried chicken, on the list of thing I didn't realize I'd miss, is the humidity. For years, I thoughtlessly counted the south's humidity among the many things ruining my skin/hair/life. If I just lived in a less humid place, I used to think, I'd have that flawless rich-girl smooth wavy hair and blogger skin I've always wanted!

Alas, the best laid plans of mice and men rarely result in hair or a complexion that will get you best laid laid. Upon arrival in my homey new tundra, I doubled down on serums, oils, and moisturizers, but my skin still felt even thirstier than I do every time I open Tinder.

I knew I needed to get a humidifier, but I was being really stubborn about it. First of all, they're expensive. Second of all, they're dorky-looking. Third of all, I have a big apartment all to myself (*bows gracefully*) and did not want to buy multiple humidifiers or lug something huge around the space. I wanted something easy to use, inexpensive, and that didn't look like it belonged in a nursing home.

Enter: the Violife Personal Humidifier Travel Kit, aka my new best friend.

A teeny, tiny humidifier might sound like it would be more work, but this one can actually last me seven or eight hours without refilling it. The water bottle that comes with the humidifier will last you through the night without getting up to refill it.

My favorite part, though, is that this humidifier works with any standard-size water bottle. So, if you're traveling, you only need to take the base with you. (It comes with a handy case!) Then, at night, just fill up whatever water bottle you've been drinking out of all day, flip it upside down, and insert it into the base. Voila! Moisture!

This ultrasonic humidifier works like any other humidifier by emitting ultra-fine mist into the air. I sleep at night with this humidifier next to my bed, and during the weekends, I keep it on the side table next to the sofa where I work/Netflix. I've even brought it to my office a few times, because the air there can get pretty drying, too.

The mist nozzle can be adjusted so that the spray heads in the direction of your choice. There's a dimmer on the front of the humidifier, so that you can control how much vapor is being emitted. The spout even has a built-in LED light that you can turn on, and it will change colors every few seconds. It's like a little built in light show right in your own home. My cat is obsessed.

The Violife Personal Humidifier comes in several different designs and colors, so you can match it to your own personal taste. I went with the white humidifier with gold circles, because it fits right into my apartment.(I do love gold, after all.)

This humidifier will only cost you $40, for the entire kit with a 20-ounce bottle and the carrying case. I've looked at lots of humidifiers, and this is the best choice I found. It's low-maintenance, affordable, cute, and most of all, it really works.

  • Are you a humidifier person? (By which I mean, are you a fan of humidifiers? Not, are you some sort of humidifier/human hybrid hellbent on destroying this planet while simultaneously keeping our skin super-fresh and plump-looking? If so, begone, you generous deviant!)
  • What's the air like where you live?
  • Anybody know where I can find some fried chicken in Massachusetts? I swear, if anyone says KFC...
