It's gonna get sappy up in here.
As the Rio Olympics approached this summer, I started getting a ton of PR emails pitching ways to incorporate beauty products into Olympics-themed stories. Gold, silver, and bronze eyeshadows! Red, white, and blue nail polishes! Brazilian butt lift surgery! (Not kidding.)
But as much as Olympic athletes get endorsements deals, I heard about only one athlete-linked beauty product: a Formula X nail color collection with Sanya Richards-Ross, the most decorated track-and-field athlete ever (though not the track-and-field athlete most closely associated with amazing manicures — that was the iconic Flo Jo).
By the way, don't get your hopes up about getting your hands on the colors — they sold out faster than Sanya can run 400 meters.
Serena Williams has been linked to OPI in the past, but I'm having a really hard time thinking of other athletes who've gotten beauty and self-care deals. There are plenty of fashion, sneaker, watch and cereal endorsements out there for Olympians, but even though it seems totally obvious to me that athletes would be perfect spokespeople for beauty products, it's a rarity.
Hear me out! Aly Raisman, gymnast and queen of the top knot, would be a perfect match for a brand like Goody or Scünci. Swimmer Missy Franklin? A clear choice for Ultra Swim Chlorine Removal Shampoo. And good ol' Ryan Lochte just revealed a new look that's begging for a Manic Panic Creamtone Perfect Pastel deal.
Listen, I'm just looking out for these folks. Most athletic careers don't pay well — especially when you're a woman — so brand endorsements are a big deal (no pun intended). And who better to be the faces of beauty brands than some of the most hardworking bodies on the planet?
Anyway, that's what's on my mind this weekend. How about you guys?
- Are you going to watch the Olympics? Any sports in particular?
- Which athletes have been beauty inspirations to you?
- Thoughts on Ryan Lochte's hair?
