Since I'm a visual person I hardly ever remember the album title but I just remember what the album art looks like.
Maybe it’s because my birthday is in September, but fall is a magical time of year for me. Is it the beautiful changing leaves? The crisp weather? The hot dudes in scarves? Yes, yes, and, obviously, yes.
It’s also when we put away our summer makeup and look for colors to keep us warm, spiritually, when it gets cold. Berry and burgundy lips are usually trumpeted as the “BIG NEW BEAUTY TREND,” despite the fact that dark lips in fall are about as risky as florals for spring. Groundbreaking.
While dark lips will always have their place, pale pinks are where it’s at this year. In this two-part series, I’ve handpicked my favorite soft pinks at a variety of price points. No matter what you’re looking for--gloss, sparkle, something for work, a special splurge product--there's something here to get you looking exceptionally gorgeous this autumn.
For Tinted Balm Babes
Clinique Chubby Stick Baby Tint in Budding Blossom
This new line of Baby Tint color balms are LEGIT. Budding Blossom is a soft, barely-there true pink that can’t help but be amazingly flattering. If you want a bit of color and lots of moisture, this is the balm for you.
On lips as pigmented as mine, it gives a subtle pale pink glow that reminds me a little of Princess Bubblegum. Because it’s such a sheer product, this will likely vary a little depending on your coloring.
Formula-wise, I’ve never had such a refreshing feeling from something other than a protective lip balm before. You’ll have to reapply hourly, so it's lucky that the big crayon makes that really easy to do. The Baby Tint line is out now.
It’s Skin Babyface Magic Tint Bar in 02 Strawberry
Hailing from Memebox, ultimate K-beauty headquarters, this adorably packaged tinted balm has quickly become a favorite of mine.
I didn’t expect a whole lot in the color arena based on what I saw on my arm. But the “Magic” of Magic Tint is that it changes color when applied to your lips. On me, it deepens into a sheer strawberry pink that is as lovely as it is unexpected.
The lone problem with this gloss is that it only lasts for about an hour before you eat it off--the strawberry scent is AMAZING. You can buy the Magic Tint Bar from Memebox starting August 30th.
For Gloss Fans
Lipstick Queen Big Bang Illusion Lip Gloss in Expansion
This is the perfect pure lip gloss formula--not sticky, long lasting, and comfortable to wear. Expansion is a fantastic dusty brown-pink with a slight copper metallic finish that makes for a truly unique shade.
Plus, it has test tube packaging. I MEAN.
Have you ever tried a dry oil? You put it on your skin and expect it to be wet, but it isn’t. This gloss is like that. I kept waiting for that gloppy feeling, which I hate, but it never came. All I had was this incredible color and metallic shine.
This gloss stays on admirably, even whilst eating the most complicated sandwiches. If that’s not a test of character, I don’t know what is. Expansion is, blessedly, available right now.
NYX Xtreme Shine Lip Cream in Nude Peach Fuzz
If you prefer your gloss a little more opaque and creamy, this is the one for you. Nude Peach Fuzz is a light peachy pink that will work just as well with a summer tan as with one’s pending fall pallor.
I surprised myself with how much I loved this. It reminds me of the colors in Miami, which is one of my favorite places. I can’t think of a better shade to transition from late summer into autumn.
This gloss is aces: very pigmented and minimally sticky, with a flat paddle applicator to give a smooth veil of color. Because it's quite opaque, I found that applying, blotting, then applying again gave the best results. It lasts about an hour, unless you eat or drink. It's available right now.
For Extreme Luxury Lovers
Cle de Peau Extra Rich Lipstick in Die Welt and Danse des Sylphes
Cle de Peau Extra Rich Lipsticks are the epitome of luxury; as amazing in quality as they are in design. Die Welt is a subtly shimmery dusty rose with coral undertones. I know, complicated, but beautiful. With CdP’s satin finish, it has a sheer to medium opacity that builds easily for a personalized shade.
Die Welt is such a beautifully subtle color, like a my-lips-but-better shade, if my lips were ACTUALLY blushing pilgrims. It's the kind of romantic fall pink that Juliet would have worn if she lived today and cared about style, is what I'm saying.
This feels fabulous on my lips. No, that’s not right, CdP’s formula is the best that I’ve ever tried. It’s so silky and soft that I actually think it might be magic.
Danse des Sylphes is a warm light but bright golden pink with CdP’s velvet finish--slightly more opaque and semi-matte, without being drying.
They say that when you find your perfect lip color, you won't need blush. Well dear readers, I think I've found it. Danse des Sylphes is so perfect with my skin and hair that it creates the illusion of color in my cheeks, which is funny, since the lines is inspired by roses. Get it? Roses? Rosy cheeks?
Both of these lipsticks boast the signature Cle de Peau faceted tip, which is much easier to negotiate than I'd thought. The outer corners can be used like lip liner, which is awesome, because I love an exact outline. The wear is exceptional--both lasted six hours and two meals. The downside to this awesome formula is that it's EXPENSIVE, and even though I’m willing to spend money on products I’ll get a lot of use out of, you shouldn't go into debt for makeup.
Stay tuned for part two of this story, where I'll show you some great pale pinks for work, party time, AND sparkle.
What's your favorite thing about fall? How are you switching up your makeup? Are you going to embrace pale pink lips this season? Are you STOKED for part two? You should be!
