I feel like I go darker and darker every winter when it comes to my lipstick choices. I'm a fan of black lipstick (though I don't wear it often) but I am even more so into deep vampy colors that almost pass for black.

And in order to male these dark colors look their best, it can't be just a one-step process.

After I apply my foundation and fill-in my brows, I line and fill in my lips with MAC Lip Pencil in Nightmoth, smudging it around a bit with my pinkie.

Next, I layer a deep, wine-colored lip pencil—yes, another one—over the top of the first layer of liner, again smudging it a bit to mix the colors.

I then take a similarly colored lipstick and apply it over the top of the pencils to really even the color out.

Finally, I take a sheer black lipstick and apply it over the top of all of that. The lipstick I used is limited-edition one from MAC's Dark Desires collection, but you can apply any sheer or glossy black lipstick/lipgloss over the top to achieve the same effect.

My general go-to when I'm doing a bold, dark lip is to do no eye makeup or just mascara, but I thought I'd switch it up this time.

After I apply eyelid primer, I sweep a bit of Star Violet Eye Shadow from MAC all over my lid and blend it up to just above the crease with a fluffy blending brush.

I take a stiff blending brush and apply more of that shadow on my lower lash line.

I apply a soft pink blush to finish the look.

Here are my favorite looks from last week's thread:

What is your favorite dark lip color? Any recommendations for some almost-black shades that don't require layering?
