When it comes to my "beauty education," two things have been really instrumental.
The first is that I took a professional makeup class in 2007. I forget about this all the time, but it really happened! I had started my blog the year before, and wanted to improve my makeup skills, since I really had none. It was relatively inexpensive and lasted for about three months, I think. Our teacher was this fabulous woman named Caroline who always wore three pairs of false eyelashes and was one of the most glamorous people I'd ever met. She would demonstrate something, we would do it on one another and then go home and practice it. It was REALLY FUN even though I consider myself a very non-artistic person.
It also marked the beginning of my love affair with brow powder and illuminating the inner corners of my eyes with eye shadow. (LOVE.)
In fact, once we were done with the course, Caroline invited me and a couple of other students to do makeup for a teen modeling contest at a mall. I went along, did a few faces, and one of the girls whose faces I did won the contest! I would like to think it was my dazzling lipstick application that won her the prize, but honestly, she was a babe. It really had nothing to do with me.
That is my makeup class story!
The other great beauty secret repository -- in my opinion -- is YouTube. YouTube beauty gurus are the best, and I have learned so much from them. I sat diligently in front of my computer screen on December 31, 2011, brushes and shadows spread out in front of me, while I copied this pretty smoky glittery eye some girl was doing. It came out pretty cute, though of course, trying to get an eye makeup detail shot in a dark room is tricky to say the least.
Anyway, the problem with YouTube beauty gurus -- at least for me -- is that I'm really picky. I'm a Virgo, I like efficiency, and I really don't need to hear a long-winded story about nothing before you actually deliver the reason I clicked on the video. AM I ASKING TOO MUCH?!
I love Kandee Johnson. I love her so much. I want to be her friend. Fair warning: if you think I am "too pink, sparkly and happy," Kandee Johnson will make you want to blow your brains out. But if you want to watch someone who is fun, has a good attitude and plenty of personality, Kandee is your girl. Here are some of my favorite videos!
I have learned a lot from Kandee, and can attribute plenty to her, including rigorous daily application of St Tropez Bronzing Mousse to my face, and my obsession with Treat Cosmetics. She knows her shit!
Are there any YouTube beauty gurus that you luh-luh-love? Tell me who they are! I always need someone new to obsess over!
