I am one of those people who are either very happy in the present moment, or extremely excited about the future. I don't look back much. Sure, I will allow myself a couple of times a year when I go through old journals, read ancient emails and reminisce about this or that, but it's not really my style.
It's weird, though: I've really been enjoying looking in the rearview mirror recently. It all started when I finally got around to reading Neil Strauss's "The Game," and couldn't believe it took me such a long time to do it. (So fascinating, really.) As I flicked through its pages, utterly engrossed, I remembered that Neil Strauss was the man who co-wrote Marilyn Manson's autobiography, "The Long Hard Road Out Of Hell," and as a confirmed Mansonite since 1997, I knew it was time to dive in.
Wowwwwww. MIND BLOWING! One of the best books I've read in ages. It took me back to my own adolescence, complete with black lipstick from Wet & Wild.
So when MAC Cosmetics sent me a tube of their limited edition Grey Friday lipstick, it didn't take much for me to pop the cap and smear it on.
As you can see from the video, I was instantly transported back to 1997, a time when Floria Sigismondi's incredible music videos dominated MTV and every rock star had a pair of PVC pants in their closet.
Surprisingly, Grey Friday is quite sheer. You can see exactly how sheer it is on Christine from Temptalia -- not what you expected, right? But I layered mine up to make it look more opaque. (When I wore it sheer, it just looked like a mistake.) So it can range from corporate goth to full on MTV Music Awards style.
Now for the bad news: if you're gaga for Grey Friday, it was limited edition, and it sold out as soon as it was launched. If you're aching for your own little tube of teenage angst, you can, of course, pay way too much for it on eBay -- or you can try a dupe, and there are plenty.
Kate Moss Lasting Finish Lipstick by Rimmel in #15 is a pale grey. Definitely not for everyone, as it can veer into "hypothermia chic" very quickly.
Gunmetal Luminizer by Estee Lauder is actually designed to be worn over another lipstick: it deepens and darkens the original shade. Pretty cool! But you can also wear it on its own.
Oil Slick by Urban Decay is shiny black with silver "microsparkle" (oh, how I love words like this). It's quite lovely and even better, it's on sale for THREE BUCKS right now!
Did you venture out to a MAC counter on Black Friday? If you did, in addition to Grey Friday, you might have gotten a preview of MAC's new Taste Temptation collection: it was sold from midnight to 4 am, and officially goes on sale on December 13th. It's quite babein'. More news on that SOON!
