Miley Cyrus Serves Up Androgynous Angst In The New Marc Jacobs Ad, And You Can, Too!

After some contouring, highlighting and getting my hair disheveled just right, I sat down on my bed and tried to think of the saddest things I could.

I’m sure that by now most of you have seen the new Marc Jacobs Spring 2014 ad featuring Miley Cyrus. In case you haven’t, it shows Miley
sitting on a dark beach, staring sullenly into the distance while a model lurks behind her and a another model is flopped down on the ground next to her. If I
had to guess, I would say that the story behind this ad campaign is… zombies?

All jokes aside, I actually quite like this. It’s obviously a change from
Miley’s usual look. There’s no platinum blonde hair, her makeup is very
minimal, and there’s no tongue wagging. It’s
a very sexy androgynous look, and you guys know I’m into that.

Naturally, I had to try it myself.

First, you want your skin to look as flawless as possible.
Depending on your coverage needs, you could use a BB cream, foundation, or even
just some concealer. I used my Clinique Redness Solutions Makeup in the
lightest shade, Calming Alabaster.

This foundation is great if you have problems with redness but
want a natural look.

Next, to really capture the dark moodiness of her eyes, I used
two coats of my favorite mascara, CoverGirl LashBlast Volume (I prefer the
waterproof version). I’m sure I’ve mentioned this mascara before, but once
more: it’s great. It lasts forever, doesn’t smear on my hooded eyes, and really
lengthens my lashes without any clumps. I’ve tried so many mascaras, and this is still my HG.

The most important step is contouring. The dark shadow under Miley’s
cheekbone immediately stood out to me. Few of us have that naturally, but it’s
easy to recreate with some bronzer.

I like to rely on the bronzer from my
e.l.f. Contouring Blush and Bronzer set for this. My kabuki brush is also from
e.l.f., and it’s a great quality brush for those on a budget.

The key to contouring is to follow the natural shape of your
face, and to be careful not to use too much bronzer. I like to tap a few dots
of bronzer going in a line from my temple, under my cheekbone. You can suck in
your cheeks to see where to put the bronzer but I prefer to face a light source
(a window is best) and see where the shadows fall on my face naturally. Then
blend it really well with your kabuki brush.

I also blended some bronzer under my bottom lip, at my temples,
and under my jaw line.

Miley’s face is really glowy in this ad as well, so I added
some highlighter on top of my cheekbones, chin, above my brows and down my
nose.

My favorite highlighter is Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector in
Opal, but I only have a free sample of it because at $41. it’s pricy. If you’re
on a budget, I also like Sonia Kashuk’s Chic Luminosity Highlighter Stick in
Sparkling Sands, which I bought at Target for about $11. Just make sure you
apply it with your fingers, not straight from the stick!

Her lips are very shiny too. I used plain old Vaseline for
that, which made me wonder which super-expensive product the makeup artist used.

The last big step is the hair. Obviously this is easiest if you
have a pixie cut. If you have longer hair with long, piecey bangs, you could
try slicking your hair back in a low ponytail or bun and then mussing up your
bangs in the front.

Here’s how I did it: I wet my hair generously and slicked back
the sides. Then I artfully arranged the front of my hair into piecey swoops
with my fingers.

It’s all held in place with Lush Dirty Hair Creme, which I
gave to my boyfriend for Christmas and keep stealing back for my own use. It
smells great (a very sexy guy scent, which is appropriate for this tomboy look)
but more importantly, it has amazing all-day hold without the crunchiness and
stickiness of gel. Definitely get this if you or any men you know are in the
market for a good hair creme.

Once I had spent half an hour trying to get my hair disheveled just right, I sat down on my bed and
tried to think of the saddest things I could: the beginning of Up, that time my crush kissed me and it
turned out it was just because my cousin asked him to, running out of Toaster
Strudels, last week’s episode of The
Bachelor
when Juan Pablo was so excited to give the first impression rose
to the opera singer and then she said “Seriously?
because she didn’t even like him back. (It was like watching someone kick a
puppy and I’d had a lot of wine by that point, OK?)

There’s few final details you’ll need if you want to take this
look all the way. Her short black nails (I used Sally Hansen Complete Salon
Manicure in Onyx) made me happy, since my attempts at long nails keep snapping
off painfully. Thanks for trying to make short nails chic again, Miley.

Also, in case you want to copy her tattoos, remember Tattly? This anchor tattoo is pretty great.
If you can’t draw a basic heart on yourself then we probably wouldn’t have been
friends in middle school. I could have recreated her tats but I chose not to,
since I’m not going for a Halloween costume (wouldn’t zombie Miley Cyrus be a
great Halloween costume?). I also didn’t have a dark, gloomy beach to sit on,
or expensive designer duds to wear.

Regardless, I hope you liked this look as much as I did.
Fingers crossed that Miley sticks with the angsty androgynous look; I think
it’s working for her.
