Oh, don't pretend like you don't have one!
Can I be honest with you guys? (This is xoVain, so, duh, of course.) I resent showering. I don't like that getting clean requires getting wet. Why hasn't the human race evolved to self-freshen? Can't someone invent, like, a special fan you step in front of and get a blast of cleansing breeze or something?
During cooler months, I can get away with not showering every day--I've been known to face-wipe my entire body if I oversleep. But in the summer, showering more often is a necessary evil. Between sweating and baring my legs more often, I just have to suck it up and get in so I can wash away the grime and shave.
So in order to feel more like a shower warrior and less like a cat being thrown into a bathtub against its will, I've been coming up with little ways to make showering something I look forward to.
MAKE A PLAYLIST
Most of my playlists can go on for half a day without repeating a single song, but because I want showering to be a relatively brief experience, I'll create little playlists--about five songs--that make showering feel a little more like party.
I find peppy vintage songs really help motivate me, like Adam Ant's "Goody Two Shoes" and Brigitte Bardot's "Moi Je Joue"--even though I don't speak a word of French and have no idea what she's saying.
C Wonder makes super-cute patterned portable speakers that I keep on the back of my toilet--far away from the shower, so my iPhone won't get wet. (And I keep the toilet lid down, too, just in case you were wondering, which I'm sure you were not.)
SHAVE WITH A DO-IT-ALL RAZOR
Shaving is usually the second thing I do when I get into the shower. The longer you wait for the warm water to penetrate, the more your skin swells up over your stubble, preventing you from getting the closest shave possible, so I used to do a super-quick scrub down of my legs to loosen the hairs before lopping them off.
Notice I said "used to."
I recently started using this adorable Venus & Olay razor (yes, I called a razor adorable) that's got five blades, so not only do I never have those annoying stragglers, but they help exfoliate my legs without the help of a separate scrub. So now shaving is the first thing I do when I get in the shower.
I'd also like to give a special shout-out to the easy-to-change cartridges and the Olay moisture bars surrounding the aforementioned blades, because they lock in moisture* and pretty much eliminate the need for shaving cream, which is awesome, because I always forget to buy it.
Oh, and get this: it smells like SUGARBERRY. I don't even know what that is! Maybe it's like a snozberry? Regardless, I now want all of my beauty implements to smell like sugarberry.
DO DOUBLE DUTY
A fast shower is a good shower, and that means a little planning ahead to get the most done in the least amount of time.
Once you're done shaving, don't just start washing your body. Instead, wash your hair, and follow it with a conditioner or hair mask that's meant to be left on for a few minutes.
It's while you're waiting out the conditioner clock that you can get the rest of your shower chores done: washing your body, scrubbing your face, brushing your teeth, anything that won't interfere with what's going on atop your head.
See, had you done those things before applying the conditioner, you'd just be standing there in shower corner, waiting, bored, possibly crying.
SPLURGE ON AN AWESOME ROBE
Sure, a big ol' towel (or "bath sheet" as Bed Bath & Beyond and my mom call them) is fine for wrapping around your body and doing whatever it is you do after you shower, but do you look forward to it? I guarantee you'll feel more grown-up, more luxurious and even more flexible if you buy yourself a robe you love.
It doesn't have to be expensive. Target's Gilligan & O'Malley Spa Terry Knit Robe is just $25, but it's good-quality, breathable, and white makes it easy to throw in a bleach load when you're doing your laundry. Another plus: its cropped length lets you admire your freshly shaved legs.
I'm always looking for more ways to make me actually want to shower, so please let me know what you do to make it more fun!
