Bangs, fringe, breakage — whatever you call it, it'll fit in some butterfly clips.
At this point I’ve tried almost every version of the pastel hair trend, so naturally, when something even slightly new comes out I’m all over it.
I initially fell in love with Wella’s new Instamatic colour line on brunette hair, as it’s the perfect way to add a bit of pastel magic to your hair without major bleach damage. I personally I don’t filter my Instagram photos, but the blending of Wella’s filter-esque washed-out pastel shades was undeniably pretty in real life, and I couldn’t stop staring at the pictures.
In the end, I decided I really needed to try it for myself.
I enlisted the help of Alysha at Parlour Salon, an awesome colourist, stylist, and friend of mine from basically a lifetime ago. Together, we schemed over pretty photos, and as she tested the product out on bleached mannequin heads to get a feel for the shades, she reported back with her findings.
Needless to say, by the time the appointment came around we were both super-excited.
I’m not going to sugarcoat this for you: it was quite the process. I went in with some purple still in my hair, plus a really bad root situation, so Alysha had to do a lot of bleaching, toning, and stripping before she could get started on the actual colour. That said, if you’re adding streaks, or starting with blonde/neutral hair, it would be a lot quicker and simpler.
Also, a word of warning: the first time around, Alysha applied the Wella colour with carefully placed foils on wet hair, and sadly, it didn’t really show up, so we had to start all over on dry hair. Though Wella’s instructions clearly state it can be applied either wet or dry, wet will really only give off a very subtle “aura” of colour, while application on dry hair yields more visible results (like the promotional pictures on Wella’s site).
The line itself includes five matte-finish, demi-permanent colours: Smokey Amethyst, Muted Mauve, Jaded Mint, Pink Dream, and Ocean Storm. There’s also Clear Dust, an intermixable “white” that can be used to lighten the shades. Each colour can be applied on it’s own, or mixed into multi-coloured strands with the others to create a rainbow effect without bleeding.
Designed to show up slightly diffused and fade beautifully, this collection is perfect for adding tiny sprinkles of rainbow dreaminess to your hair, no matter the colour.
The end result on my silvery platinum blonde? Total opalescent perfection! Alysha used Pink Dream, Ocean Storm, and Muted Mauve, and I was so happy with the rainbow mermaid results.
She also recommended a few awesome Kevin Murphy products that I’ve been using and loving: Plumping Wash and Rinse for volume, Shimmer Shine Mist to add a bit of sparkle to the colour, and the Hydrate Me Masque to add moisture.
Oh, and by the way, these photos are #nofilter.
