The equestrian took a silver medal in the eventing earlier this week (alongside Zara Phillips, Tina Cook, Nicola Wilson and William Fox-Pitt) after delivering a flawless round on her horse, Imperial Cavalier.

It was only after watching that nail-biting final that I learned more about Mary King. She is 51 years old. In 2001 she broke her neck while exercising her horse but it didn’t end her career – less than a year later she was back competing at the top her sport. And after winning her silver in London she declared, “Bring on Rio!” If that’s inspiring I don’t know what is.

“I have no visions of stopping yet,” she said. “I love the sport, I’m fit and healthy and even though I’m getting old, I’m loving it. I’m still dreaming of that gold medal. I’ve got an upgraded silver from Athens, a bronze in Beijing and a silver today – and next time it’s going to be gold!” Picture Credit: Rex Features
