Yep, I'm a Slut

Sluts are FUN! Sluts do whatever they want, whenever they want, and they don't regret anything. Sluts will do a lot for a good story.

People called me a lot of things in high-school -- freak, dyke, lard-ass -- but I can't recall anyone ever calling me a slut. Three-hundred pound National Merit Scholars were not sluts in the collective consciousness of the Oklahoma rednecks who daily tormented me.

Perhaps never having it hurled at me during my formative years contributes to its lack of barb for me now. In fact, I love the word SLUT. Say it out loud right now: SLUT! Doesn't it have a nice ring to it? Like FUCK, it just sort of jumps off your tongue and into the world.

As with any reclaimed word, some people find it uncool when I use it to describe myself, as I did in yesterday's post about my wedding dress. But to me there's nothing negative about being a slut. Sluts are FUN! Sluts do whatever they want, whenever they want, and they don't regret anything. Sluts dive as voraciously into sex as they do their other many passions. Sluts like their own bodies, and other people's too. Sluts are enthusiastic! Sluts will do a lot for a good story.

Sluts are confident and have great shoes. Sluts are pretty. Sluts find something to love about all different kinds of people. Sluts are brave. Sluts laugh a lot.  Sluts challenge gender roles. Sluts are fearless. Sluts love adventure! Sluts will try new things without worrying about looking stupid. Sluts high-five after sex.

In my life as a slut-enthusiast, I've met many like-minded souls. The best men, in my opinion, are slut-lovers! I asked some of my guy friends whom I know go in for this particular delicacy to let me know what the word means to them.

My friend Michael, who once told me sluts are "his favorite thing in the world," says: "A slut is a girl who fully embraces sex, I think, and also, is driven by it. It isn't an accessory to a relationship. It's an imperative and it's enjoyable. ‎ Also I think it involves capitulating wholly to your desires. In short, she's a girl who 'wants it.'"

I then texted Leo with "Can you tell me what a slut is to you?" He wrote back, "Can I ever!" He then followed up with: "Generally a very low 'talking about relationship' to 'talking about sex' ratio. Gives blowjobs for the sake of giving blowjobs. Has very little to do with actual promiscuity. Appreciates sluttiness in other women. Very rare trait in general. Owns several skirts or dresses that she would almost never actually wear out.  She watches straight porn. Not erotica. Not for-women-by-women porn. Standard issue wank material for guys. Basically the best thing ever. If I can make just one woman sluttier, my life will be complete."

I heart guys who heart sluts because it means they aren't intimated by sexual women and aren't going to panic if you try something you saw in a movie one time or accidentally call them "Daddy." Slut-lovers celebrate your body and the weird/fun things it can do.  If you female ejaculate, a normal guy's reaction might be to freak out, but a slut lover's reaction will be "Cool!"

I call myself a slut because I love sex and I've had lots of it and I love talking about sex and weird sex and sex and sexual attention and more sex! And while I understand that the word has traditionally been used a perjorative, the actual textbook definition -- a promiscuous woman -- is actually not an insult in my book. I mean, can you actually answer the question, "What's wrong with being a slut?" without saying something that sets women's equality back like 100 years? Slut power!

Are you a slut? It's cool not to be; I just hope you don't feel left out when all us sluts get matching Pink Ladies jackets and walk in formation like that scene in "Reservoir Dogs."  Does the word slut bother you? Why or why not?
