First, I read the utterly insane overturned conviction in Italy of a charge against a 60-year-old man for having sex with a minor after he was caught having sex with an 11-year-old girl because -- and I quote, THIS IS A QUOTE -- the high court ruled that there was "the existence of an amorous relationship, the absence of physical force, the girl’s feelings of love.”
OF AN 11-YEAR-OLD GIRL. Eleven. Eleven. I would just like to keep writing that number: 11.
And let's not forget last year, when a raped 11-year-old in Chile -- who was denied an abortion -- ignited a firestorm on social media and was publicly praised by the Chilean president for going through with the pregnancy, saying the decision showed "depth and maturity." The child said on TV of her pregnancy through rape: "It will be like having a doll in my arms. I'm going to love the baby very much, even though it comes from that man who hurt me."
Mind-boggling -- and devastating. Over in America, it also makes me think of the video currently making the rounds where "Duck Dynasty" star Phil Robertson encourages men to marry women when they are "15 or 16." WHAT?
Second, I read and saw the pictures of a female covered in vomit that were tweeted out from teenagers in Georgia with suggestions that the girl be raped. "Somebody put something in her drink, anyways me and my brother bout to rape this bitch," one of several tweets read. (Police are now investigating.)
Finally, to top of the litany of horrors, there has been an eruption of protests after police tried to force cremation of a 16-year-old girl in India, brutally gang-raped who succumbed to her injuries.
I don't know if you have been following any of these stories, but I would like to make a simple plea.
I ask you: Do you have a penis? Or do you know someone who does?
Will you pledge with me to not be evil? To not raise your sons to be? To actively work to make a world that stops producing these atrocities?
If you will and if you do, I thank you.
Because right now, I am simply horrified.
