An Apology To Our Community From The Editors

After many discussions, we made a difficult decision -- xoJane will no longer work with writers who violate our editorial standards while interacting with the community. We want to be clear: hate speech will not be tolerated.

Last week, one of our contributors expressed some extremely troubling and downright offensive ideas in comments. We were all shocked and upset by what was said.

After many discussions, we made a difficult decision -- xoJane will no longer work with writers who don’t keep to certain standards of community engagement.

In those discussions, we also wanted to make sure we had a clear plan for moving forward, in order to prevent this from happening again. We want to be clear that hate speech will not be tolerated, in any form, on this site. We failed to be clear with our contributors on what we expect from them when they are commenting as well as writing. That was our error, and we are truly sorry it led to this.

We have a set of guidelines for articles that go up on the site, which we enforce as best we can. We now realize that these guidelines need to carry over to all areas of the site.

These new guidelines, which we will formally introduce as soon as possible, will apply to everyone who comments on xoJane: editors, contributors, and community members alike.

As we continue to grow and evolve, so much of what we learn comes directly from the continued feedback and contributions of the xoJane community and we are incredibly thankful for your emails and comments.

So understand that we have heard your rage and your thoughtful criticism. xoJane.com will always be A Work In Progress, and we always want to hear your input on what you want to get out of the site and what you expect from the community. Feel free to continue the discussion here in the comments or email us at info@xojane.com.
