That person you love is mostly likely yourself.
I don't just get "the sniffles" or "a bit of a cough". Oh no. The overachiever-must-do-everything-to-the-nth-degree-"THERE'S NO CRYING IN BASEBALL" lunatic in me has to crank everything up to 11. I take someone else's cold (in this case, darling Mr. Louise's) and my screwy immune system raises it to new magnificent mucousy, achey, phlegm-rattley heights.
I had chickenpox twice. And then I got shingles. I can do anything.
Anyway, this past week, while I've been expelling the evil of the world from my chest and nose, I've also been eating some pretty weird shit. I don't know if it's because I need strong flavors to be able to taste anything right now, or if it's because somewhere in my lizard brain these foods mean comfort.
All I know is that whenever I start to feel that special brand of "sick cranky" — where my underpants are an injustice and the hair stuck to the back of my sweaty neck makes me want to cry — indulging in some bizarre cravings is the only thing that comforts me.
These are some of things I've consumed in the past seven days:
Instant mashed potatoes doused in yellow mustard and buffalo wing sauce
Dried cranberries with salt and pepper on them
Potato chips dipped in Lyle's Golden Syrup (a thick, English sugar syrup that is basically my childhood in a tin)
Sprite and cough syrup (a cure-all my mom used to give me for everything from colds to demonic possession)
Peach slices and vegetable soup (of course I dipped the peaches in the soup)
Yes, I know a lot of these foods are bad for colds. And NO, I'm not pregnant. This is just how I eat.
What weird foods do you crave when you're sick? What are your favorite delicious/disgusting combinations? What treats soothe you when you're under the weather?
I'm not trolling for new snack ideas...but I am.
