Obnoxiously Objectifying Thursdays: Bruce Springsteen

How can you possibly resist The Boss?

I was going to get around to writing this OOT eventually, but throwing things open to a public vote on Twitter and discovering how many of you share my lust for The Boss made me realise I needed to write it NOW.

From Tory’s Wife-of-Bath-esque bawdy declaration that “If I had time I’d write it myself *wipes seat*” to Sali Hughes’ simple “Bruce. Always Bruce” it’s clear that, like me, many of you have long harboured a crush on the man who can still skid across a stage on his knees like a total legend.

There are SO many reasons to love Bruce Springsteen and I’m sure you will tell me yours in the comments below, but let me kick things off with a few:

He’s got an amazing ass. What? This is Obnoxiously Objectifying Thursday – I am allowed to talk about his ass! And he totally made it all about his ass on the cover of Born in the USA (photographed by Annie Leibovitz) so it’s fiiiiine to ogle it.

He’s totally into his wife of 22 years, Patti Scialfa, who’s an integral member of the E Street Band. Watching them flirting with each other on stage as I did when I saw The Boss play Crystal Palace a few years ago (when he played for FIVE HOURS btw), is the cutest thing.

He’s a longtime advocate of gay marriage and has lent his support to several campaigns.

He keeps it real, still living in his native New Jersey.

He’s a poet in blue jeans, distilling pure Americana into every one of his songs, from I’m On Fire to Philadelphia. Bruce tackles the hopes, heartbreak, dreams and disappointments of everyday life through sensitive lyrics that are given an edge edge with his gritty, growly voice. And he’s the sexiest guitar player. Sigh.

Do we love Bruce because in his tight denims and grubby 'kerchief he looks like a sexy bit of rough, making us think of that Bob Dylan lyric, "His clothes are dirty but his hands are clean / And you're the best thing that he's ever seen" and triggering all our Lady Chatterley/Mellors fantasies? Maybe...

My favourite Bruce songs are I'mGoing Down (“you let out one of your bored sighs Well lately when I look into your eyes I'm goin down…”) and No Surrender (“We learned more from a three minute record baby than we ever learned in school”).

Which are yours and why do you love The Boss? Share!
