Great Moments In Fashion At Large: Damon Albarn's Mickey Mouse Shirt

This shirt always makes me feel heavy metal. Well, not really, just in the song-way.

Mickey Mouse t-shirts have been on my mind a lot lately, after seeing a sick image from an old British Vogue story featuring Gisele in a sheer maxi dress, chucks and a Mickey Mouse sweater on one of my favorite blogs. I LOVE Mickey Mouse sweaters and t-shirts, but here's the thing: I have never been particularly attached to the cartoon character for his own... merits. My love for Disney extends to Mary Poppins and Aladdin; the Mouse isn't really part of the picture. So how come I have such strong feelings about its graphic representation on clothes?

It's all Damon Albarn's fault.

Yes, he, the lead singer of the band Blur who ruled our parties with 2 minutes of pure unadulterated bliss dancing-screaming to Song 2 on the dance floor. In the classic video, Damon and co. hang out in a wallpapered room where shit goes crazy once the distortion pedal kicks. It's all super crazy and yet somehow the part that became burned in my subconscious is the one of him in his perfectly faded tee.

Here's a little refresher:

(Ok, so of course I had a MAJOR crush on him, it's not like he wasn't in my subconscious all the time already.)

In all of this I remembered that I actually OWN a Mickey Mouse tee. I had to dig it out of my "clothes I never wear but will never throw out because of sentimental attachment" tupperware box and as soon as I put it on I remembered why I loved it so much. It's just so damn cool! I found it at Urban Outfitters (come on, where else?) on my first ever trip to DC, a school trip for the Model United Nations national competition, and it immediately became my favorite thing in my closet. I had retired it because it's kind of too tight on me, but I think I might put it into rotation because I love it too much to care about its width right now.

Do you guys have any object "obsessions" because they were related to someone you liked or were trying to emulate too? What were they? Let me know in the comments!
