There's yogurt and jelly in here, and you can't eat either.
I love beauty and I love beer. I live in Madison, Wisconsin, home of cheese and beer. Trouble is, I’m lactose intolerant, so I’m basically considered a pariah by, well, everyone. The only thing that gives me a pass is that I can still enjoy a Wisconsin beer with all of my friends. Imagine if I was gluten intolerant! I’m convinced I’d be exiled from the entire state. So when I discovered a beauty brand that made all of their shampoos and body washes with beer, I was like “Wait…”
It’s called BRÖÖ, and I am all about it.
Why beer? Beer gives your hair natural body and shine (by pouring it on your hair, not by just drinking it, sadly.) Founders Sarah and Brad Pearsall discovered this when both of their mothers told them that they used to use beer as their secret-hair-weapon in college. Unbelieving, Sarah took a beer into the shower with her one day, and came out with hair that looked fit for a Tresemmé commercial, shiny, bouncy, with tons of body. The couple set out on a mission to create a shampoo made with beer, with everything you love about a salon shampoo, without any harsh chemicals.
Look, I’m the farthest thing from a chemist, but I do know a thing or two about beer, so let me try to break down why beer is so good for your hair. Beer is brewed with barley, water, hops, and yeast (no, this is not a lesson in home brewing, god forbid.) These four ingredients have tons of proteins, B vitamins, natural oils, and antioxidants, all of which are great for your hair. The brewing process brings out and intensifies all of these ingredients, the same way you guys told me that iron works better when taken with vitamin C, or whatever. So using beer in a shampoo is basically genius. And, it’s way safer than taking a glass beer bottle into the shower with you -- not that I would know.
BRÖÖ has four different shampoos and conditioners, $9.99-$12.99, named for different beers: Craft Beer, with scents of fresh cascade hops and malted barley.
Volumizing Pale Ale, with ginger, citrus, and lemongrass.
Smoothing I.P.A. with cinnamon, ginger, and cardamom.
Hydrating Porter, with hints of toffee and caramel.
My personal favorite is Hydrating Porter because 1.) dark beers are my favorite and 2.) my hairstylist just lightened my hair again. It’s been lightened three times in the last year so my ends tend to be parched. Side note: Is it true what they say? Am I really going to lose all my hair by 40 because of everything I’m putting it through? I don’t lighten it that often. Am I even going to make it to 40?
So I hop in the shower and use BRÖÖ Hydrating Porter shampoo and conditioner for the first time. My thoughts are as follows:
- LOL I’m using a beer shampoo. Very “on-brand.” Note to self: Google vodka shampoos.
- Why did I drink so much last night? Why is this shower spinning?
- Wow, this porter shampoo smells amazing, with notes of toffee and caramel, with a subtle chocolate and coconut back. Like a real porter!
- Did I close my tab?
- Wait, WAIT. My hair feels so soft! Hydrated, without feeling gunky! It rinses clean!
After I blowdry and spook myself with my ghastly morning-after reflection, I realize that my hair has a tons of shine, doesn’t look fried, and best of all, my color is still intact! I’ve mentioned that while my hair is color treated, I barely ever let it anywhere near the shower head except for when it’s like, necessary, but BRÖÖ is kind and gentle to my precious lavender hair because it is formulated without sulfates, silicones, and sodium chlorides. AND, it’s vegan and cruelty free!
Though I have talked at length about how I am rarely washing my hair, I would like to confirm that I AM IN FACT SHOWERING DAILY. Sometimes twice! And there’s BRÖÖ for that, too!
BRÖÖ makes two body washes, $9.99, Citrus Pale Ale with natural citrus flavor, and Oatmeal Porter made with real oatmeal! My fave is the Oatmeal Porter because it’s super creamy and luxurious, and smells amazing. Did you know that European spas have hot tubs full of beer for people so soak up all the vitamins, proteins, and antioxidants? CRAZY! Have any of you guys ever done that? Don’t for a second think that I didn’t put serious thought into filling up my bathtub with a couple cases of cheap beer for a photo op for this article. I can barely bring myself to drink cheap beer, much less submerge myself in it.
Have you guys tried out BRÖÖ? What about other beauty products made with booze? What's your favorite beer? Have you ever been in a beer hot tub? Tell me everything in the comments.
