And does that count as cheating on beauty websites?
Often waterproof mascaras aren’t the greatest (dry and clumpy, yuk) and if you’re eternally wedded to a particular product (at the moment I’m favouring MAC Zoom Lash Black Mascara) and find yourself getting caught in, oh I don’t know, one of the INTERMINABLE RAIN SHOWERS that are plaguing our fair isles, you’re taking a one-way train to Panda Town (do you like that? I just made it up!)
Similarly, if you’re the kind of person that finds themselves weeping in bus stops (not that I’ve ever done that) or likes making exercise classes marginally less soul-destroying by wearing a bit of make-up (nope, not me, never), then a tear and sweat-proof solution is quite handy.
What you need is an umbrella/anorak for lashes – aka a kind of topcoat that you put on top of your regular mascara instead of wearing the waterproof stuff. Enter Lash Genius by Anastasia Beverly Hills (£14, cultbeauty.co.uk). Apparently Anatasia Soare is known as 'the definitive eye and brow expert' and is responsible for tending to Charlize Theron, Madonna, Megan Fox, Claudia Schiffer, Oprah and Penelope Cruz, so it’s fair to say her products come pretty highly recommended. Ok then, but what about this particular one?
It doesn't look like an anorak, but it acts like one
I applied Lash Genius at my desk, over my MAC mascara. It’s a clear, greyish product that you put on just like any other mascara. I did several coats because the first didn’t really feel like it was coating my lashes properly. And then to the testing: first, I rubbed my eyes loads (it is, after all, delightful hay fever season – which is the only thing unaffected by the rain. Fantastic.) Hmm, not great – a bit of grey smudginess beneath the eyes and the stuff comes off in little balls.
Next, to the kitchen sink for a dunking. Shoving my dripping fringe out of my eyes, I scrutinize the mascara and dab vigorously at it with kitchen roll. And it doesn’t budge! So in conclusion, this stuff definitely makes your regular mascara water (and sweat and tear)-resistant.
Another nifty trick you can use it for is after putting on false lashes, apply a coat of mascara and then one of Lash Genius and it’ll blend the real and false lashes together for a super-natural look. Lash Genius by Anastasia Beverly Hills, £14, cultbeauty.co.uk
