TOO HOT TO LIVE, TOO YOUNG TO DIE: Stay Frosty with Peppermint.

After my showers back in college, my big, nasty frat house bathroom would smell like a giant candy cane, which all the idiots I lived with seemed to love, and so did I.

Y’all it has been a HOT summer! I love summer and think we should be thankful for every single bit of it, but there are times when the heat gets the best of even me. But worry not! I have the perfect products to combat the high temperatures that have surely been getting you down. You know you’ve been toasty, so keep reading.

There are a few elements and scents that I just do not stand a chance against, and one of my absolute favorites is MINT! Ya dig? Any time I see a new product that is made with or smells like mint, I am DONE because there is no way I can resist. I love it! Peppermint! Spearmint! Tea Tree Oil! Anything that smells minty, can cool me off and make me tingle (not in the STD kind of way, thank you) is pretty much a guaranteed purchase.

I used to think that minty delicious products could only be found around the holiday season, but NO. You just have to know where to look! And I am here to guide you, so be afraid.

My first minty favorite is C.O. Bigelow’s Mentha Vitamin Body Lotion. his body lotion is infused (“infused,” look at me go) with peppermint oil and peppermint extract. The difference between peppermint oil and peppermint extract is that the oil is pure peppermint, whereas the extract is a flavored solution, a little peppermint mixed with a lot of something else. This product actually has both. This is my favorite peppermint body lotion by far because instead of just being scented with peppermint fragrance, it actually has the real thang all up in it. And it’s a difference you can FEEL! A minute or two after you apply, you can feel the peppermint oils begin to soothe the driest parts of your skin, which for me are my knuckles and elbows. In the summer, I live for the cooling sensation because it really helps chill me out on the hottest of days. I’m wearing it right now and loving it. Tingle with me.

My next chilly obsession is DIRTY SPRINGWASH from Lush. Besides the raunchy name, this body wash smells INCRED. I’m serious. I was using another peppermint body wash for a long time and I was pretty happy with it, and then I smelled this stuff and was like BYE. The minute you pop the lid, you are greeted with an intensely pleasing smell of spearmint that I love so very much that I always wait a little bit longer than necessary to rinse it off. It’s great to cool you off the minute you get out of bed on those mornings in the summer when you wake up and the weather is already in the nineties.

And, I noticed that my skin was noticeably softer the second I rinsed it off, which I had never noticed before from any other product. Yes, this scent is technically part of the men’s line, but trust me when I say that there is nothing about the scent of this body wash that is particularly masculine. Other members of the DIRTY line, yes. In fact, I’m wearing the DIRTY perfume right now, and while being served with a strong shot of spearmint, it’s followed by tarragon and thyme. The herbs give it a very clean feeling though they do smell less herby and more like the bicycle store that my dad owns. I’m serious, I swear there are notes of tire tread and chain oil in there. It’s minty and clean nonetheless, but definitely a bit more masculine than the more universal body wash.

BEAUTY/BIKE STORE SIDE NOTE: Did you know that guys who build bikes use cans of Aquanet to secure the handlebars? AQUANET! DRAG QUEEN REALNESS! Sorry, Dad.

My last frigid favorite is Organix Hydrating Teatree Mint Shampoo and Conditioner.

Hold on, legitimate question. How many of you use drugstore shampoo as opposed to salon quality shampoo, hmm? Be honest because, as always, I am not here to judge. I’m all about using high-end products when they work better than a less expensive alternative, but I always used cheap shampoo and conditioner for as long as I can remember. And THEN I met someone who was completely floored that I didn’t use better quality products. Fast forward a little and that same person and I started taking numerous showers together and eventually moved in together. You see where I’m going with this (I just hate saying “boyfriend,” ugh, is there anything grosser? Though he doesn’t seem to appreciate it when I refer to him as “my main bitch”). Now that I blew my hair to smithereens by going platinum blonde, I have to use better products anyway, Bumble, obviously. Before that, I did up my shampoo game, though. But what do you guys use? And why? Seriously, tell me everything.

So, Organix Teatree Mint is GLORIOUS. I discovered the shampoo and conditioner when I was in college and have often gone back to them over many other minty shampoos since then. The shampoo and conditioner are made with teatree oil, peppermint oil and milk proteins, all blending together for a smell that is minty and mildly sweet. It feels ridiculously creamy during use and my hair always felt nourished afterward. I think I was using them when my hair was turquoise, so my hair definitely needed some love.

After my showers back in college, my big, nasty frat house bathroom would smell like a giant candy cane, which all the idiots I lived with seemed to love, and so did I. Yes, I was in a frat. I was a frat boy. We’ll talk about it later.

What are your favorite peppermint products? Which ones should I try out? And where do you stand on the quality of your shampoo? Have you seen that nude picture of Prince Harry? These are the big questions, people. Hit me @TynanBuck
