I basically called my mom for help. Except when I say mom, I mean an esthetician.
Although I love the routine involved in using multiple beauty products, I am also always on the lookout for ways to simplify. Now that my course of Accutane is behind me, I certainly need fewer products. So I thought I'd take Dove up on its Beauty Bar challenge: For two weeks (double the standard seven days), I'd wash my face exclusively with the $5 bar of soap.
Let’s take a look at the pros and cons.
It's cheap and easy. Your beauty routine could not be any simpler or cheaper if you tried. Imagine being able to use the same product all over your body and face. I loved it. I felt free from the bonds of capitalism, even if it was just for those few precious shower moments.
It didn't irritate my sensitive eyes. I used the bar to remove stubborn makeup and my sensitive eyes were totally fine with it. The lack of harsh ingredients was also kind to my skin, which can get a bit ruffled by new products, especially fragranced ones.
It's not too drying. Every face wash I have ever used, be it for sensitive or super-dry skin, makes my face feel tight after using it. Moisturizer normally resolves this issue, but I can’t even pause to brush my teeth. But because the Dove Beauty Bar is a quarter moisturizing cream, this wasn't a problem--at first.
The moisturizing effects wear off FAST. I will probably recommend the Dove Beauty Bar for your body until the end of time. It's a different story when it comes to your face, though. After washing and moisturizing, my skin felt supple and hydrated. But within an hour my skin began to feel tight and dry. At first, I thought it might just be a temporary adjustment phase, but I did the challenge for double the recommended time and it got worse. The drier areas of my face began to produce oil to compensate, which was unacceptable.
While I love this fragrant little bar for my body, my face didn’t appreciate it as much. If you’re worried about harsh chemicals in your face wash, I’d recommend the very gentle Cetaphil facial cleanser as an alternative. If you’re using nothing on your face, you may as well give it a go and see if you like it. Personally, I’m sorry to say I'd have to rate the challenge a failure.
