I Wore a Weird Lip Mask in the Office to Help My Desperately Chapped Lips

Maybe next time I’ll do this at home while watching American Crime Story.

chapped lips, lip mask, patchology

What It Is: A lip-shaped patch that promises to cure even the most weather-beaten pout.

Who Tried It: Sarah Kinonen, People Style & Beauty Editorial Assistant

Why We Tried It: I suffer from severely chapped lips, and while I use a lip scrub and balm to slough off dry skin regularly, I’ve been in the market for something a little more powerful.

Level of Difficulty: 1

Patchology FlashPatch Lip Gels: When I first met with Patchology during a deskside last fall, I knew I wanted to try the skincare brand’s latest innovation: a hydrating lip mask. You’ve probably seen (and I’ve even tried!) the cutesy K-beauty versions on the market, but this one is much more toned-down. The formula contains peptides, niacinamide and green tea extract to moisturize and target fine lines and wrinkles around the lip area. And since my lips were driving me crazy at work this week, I smacked one on right in the middle of our open office plan. (It’s for science!)

The application process, which is just removing the patch from the jar and placing it on clean lips, was simple enough (minus the slime factor that comes with the patch extraction). And while I imagined the hardest part of the lip mask process would be keeping it on for the five-minute allotment, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the gel patch stayed in place — on its own — for the entire mask duration. It just required a bit of smoothing and coaxing before I let it do the lip magic thing.

Verdict: The patch itself worked wonders on my dry lips. After the five-minute application, my lips felt smooth, moisturized and not at all flaky. Instead of wiping off the leftover serum from the mask, I just rubbed the remaining goo into my lips for an extra boost of hydration.

Despite the five minutes of office awkwardness, these are totally worth it. 10/10 would recommend, though maybe next time I’ll do this at home while watching American Crime Story.
