I May Be a Trainwreck, But My Skin Doesn't Have to Be

It's my right to be a hot mess, but I want my skin to be just hot--full stop.

As I age out of my early twenties, I've started to notice a few things.

  • One: everyone is getting married. Y'all need to chill.
  • Two: I need to figure out what I want to do with my life, I guess.
  • Three: my skin isn't nearly as resilient to my poor life decisions as it was three or four years ago. One night of hard drinking leaves its mark on my face right away, and I go hard several times a week.

Look, I'm a grown woman. I handle my shit, I pay my bills, I pay taxes. I also like going out and getting weird as often as possible. You can find me on a Monday night dancing to live blues and taking shots. Or on ladies night at the local dive, you'll find me downing G&T's like the thirsty, thirrrrsty girl I truly am.

I have fun and enjoy my life as your Friendly Neighborhood Trainwreck (P.S. did y'all LOVE that movie? I'm obsessed), but that doesn't mean I want my skin to visibly betray my late-night habits, okay? I might enjoy moonlighting as a hot mess but I still want the skin of a church-going, school-teaching good girl.

Rather than adjust my lifestyle (because, um, boring), I rely on a bevy of products to keep my skin looking first-day-of-school fresh, no matter how rough I feel. Here are my secrets to looking like I've slept...

Kiehl's Ultra Facial Overnight Hydrating Masque, $35

Thanks to an onslaught of stress and a change in medications earlier this summer, I experienced some of the worst breakouts of my life. As a relative newbie to acne, I felt like a lost child wandering through the world of skincare as I tried to heal my battered, blemished skin.

It wasn't until resident genius Danielle suggested a moisturizing mask that I started to see a noticeable difference. Before, I had been attempting to merely dry out every spot, which was only making my skin worse. Once I incorporated this mask into my skincare routine times a week, I noticed an immediate difference!

This mask has a thick, jelly-like consistency. I apply a thin layer on my face after pulling my hair back with a headband before falling asleep. Overnight, it moisturizes, replenishes, and plumps my skin.

My skin became less red and irritated after just one use. After using it for a few weeks, it's become an irreplaceable part of my routine. I like to think it makes up for all the hydration I deprive myself of on nights out.

Mario Badescu Protein Night Cream, $22

On nights when I don't want to go all-out with a mask, I opt for this night cream. Packed with vitamin A and collagen, it leaves my skin feeling teenage levels of fresh come morning. You'd never know I was in the Whataburger drive-thru line at 4am the night before!

Pro tip: This stuff is thiiiiick. A little goes a long way.

Kiehl's Midnight Recovery Concentrate, $46

When I emailed the (suuuuper awesome) Kiehl's rep and asked her, naively and hungoverly, if they had any products that could radically change someone's skin overnight, she was quick to respond with their midnight recovery concentrate.

"Midnight" and "recovery" are two words in my regular vernacular, so I was like, "Yep! Gimme!" As soon as it arrived, I was eager to slather it on. I've been using it now for a few weeks and it quickly became my new favorite oil. (And I'm a huge oil fan!)

Evening primrose oil works to regenerate skin and boost radiance, while lavender oil reduces redness and blotchiness. Squalane, a botanical lipid and Kiehl's signature ingredient, works to restore natural moisture.

At night, this stuff makes a dramatic difference as you sleep but I've also taken to applying it in the morning as well since I'm obsessed with the glowy, woke look it provides.

Mario Badescu Hyaluronic Eye Cream, $18

I was always an eye cream skeptic before I tried this stuff, but Mario's got me hooked. It's lighter and less greasy than standard lotions. I've been trying to use it before passing out every night and I've noticed my eye sockets have stopped looking so sunken, dark, and skull-ish.

Simply pat a small amount (pat, never rub!) around your eyes before sleep or in the morning. No one will ever guess you routinely wake up without a clue where your phone is! (It's usually still in your purse. Or it's in the fridge. Does that just happen to me? Oh. Okay.)
