I basically called my mom for help. Except when I say mom, I mean an esthetician.
Lately my skin seems to be more and more likely to be irritated by the various products that I use on it. In an effort to be a little more gentle to my skin, I’ve been trying out as many natural skin care products as I can find at the drugstore. Here’s the complete list, from facial wipes to lip balm.
Face Wipes: Alba Botanica Clean ‘N Treat Daily Cleansing Towelettes
These face wipes are great because they contain 2% salicylic acid, so they unclog pores and prevent breakouts while helping clean off all the grime from the day. It can be a little drying so I don’t use them more than once per day at the most. These wipes have no artificial colors or fragrances (just a natural fragrance that’s strong but not unpleasant), no parabens or phthalates, and they are not tested on animals.
Facial Cleanser: Desert Essence Gentle Nourishing Organic Cleanser
A face wipe isn’t enough to remove makeup, so I love using this cleanser for days when I’m all made up. It’s formulated for dry and sensitive skin with aloe vera and cucumber. It has no artificial fragrances, parabens, phthalates, animal-derived ingredients or testing, and it’s gluten-free and made from renewable sources and biodegradable formula. Phew! Also, it really is very gentle on my sensitive skin and it cleans well.
Exfoliator: Avalon Organics Lavender Luminosity Exfoliating Enyzme Scrub
I love the smell of lavender, and this scrub does not disappoint. It’s rich enough to not be drying and it’s not too harsh to use on sensitive skin. It contains 70% organic content and no added fragrances, parabens, or sulfates. This one is also 100% vegetarian and is cruelty-free.
Toner: Thayers Alcohol-Free Original Witch Hazel (Aloe Vera Formula)
I don’t use toner often, but when I do I always use Thayers. I like the alcohol-free aloe vera formula in the green bottle. It promises to moisturize and cleanse, and it does both without irritating my skin. I also love the scent.
Soap: Dr. Bronner’s Shikakai Soap and 18-In-1 Hemp Lavender Pure-Castile Soap
Dr. Bronner’s products are made of organic and fair trade ingredients and packaged in 100% recyclable bottles. Their Lavender Shikakai Soap and 18-in-1 Hemp Lavender Pure-Castile Soap are packed with ingredients like jojoba oil, coconut oil, and olive oil (all organic) while smelling amazing. Plus you can use the latter for everything from your body to your dirty dishes.
Body Lotion: Planet Botanicals Virgin Coconut Body Cream
This body cream is saving my skin this winter with its luxuriously rich moisture. It is seriously so thick that you have to spend a few moments massaging it in--and I don’t consider that a bad thing. The best part is they source their ingredients from growers and women’s shea butter cooperatives in Africa. You can get great skin while supporting economic and environmental sustainability.
Sunscreen: Badger SPF 30 Lavender Zinc Oxide Sunscreen Cream
This sunscreen is made up of 100% natural and 98% organic ingredients, and it’s cruelty-free. The SPF 30 is the recommended amount, and it is water-resistant for 40 minutes so it’s great for summer fun. This is a sunscreen you can feel good about wearing.
Moisturizer: Yes To Carrots Fragrance Free Daily Moisturizer SPF 15
I’ve been using this as my daily moisturizer. It has SPF 15, is free of parabens and fragrance, and is 98% natural. It sinks in immediately but moisturizes my skin all day. Yes To is definitely a favorite brand for me.
Night Cream: Desert Essence Gentle Nourishing Night Cream for Dry & Sensitive Skin
I put this fragrance-free night cream on every night and the next day I wake up with soft, plump skin. It’s unbelievably rich and hydrating, probably thanks to the aloe vera and argan oil.
Facial Oils: The Little Oil Shoppe 100% Pure Sweet Almond Oil and Avocado Oil
I love to buy discounted pure oils at T.J. Maxx whenever I see them. I have a bottle of argan oil by 100% Pure, and now I have these two as well. I put a few dabs on top of moisturizers or serums to give my dry skin a boost, and it does wonders. Plus, like it says in the name, the only ingredient is the oil, and that’s all I want.
Lip Balm: Badger Lavender & Orange Lip Balm
I am addicted to this lip balm. It moisturizes my lips like no other lip balm I’ve tried, and it smells amazing. Plus it’s made up of organic and natural ingredients (which is the only kind I want on my lips, ideally).
