It's gonna get sappy up in here.
IT'S BEGINNING TO LOOK A LOT LIKE SHARK WEEK.
It’s that time of the year again, when everyone’s favorite part of summer is just around the corner! SHARK WEEK! The week when we all turn our attention from Game of Whatever, that show with the walking zombies, and the rest of our crap TV and focus on our favorite underwater menaces: sharks. It’s like “Jaws” come to life for a full week of drama, excitement, and education.
I mean, I’m guessing. I’ve never actually watched anything during shark week. I actually didn’t even really know that it was a marathon of shows on the Discovery Channel until I Googled it just now. I don’t really watch that much TV and I certainly don’t go out of my way to watch anything not starring one of the Kardashians, but I know Shark Week is a thing so I decided to do my part, and what better way for me to do so than talking about NAIL ART.
I mean, if everyone is going to do summer nail art with palm trees and fruit, then I can do Shark Week nail art and it's not going to be any less absurd.
During one particularly bad hangover earlier this year, I was lying down, wishing I was dead, and scrolling through Instagram. I stumbled across a particularly awesome manicure, which lead me to an entire account of awesome manicures, all by a young woman named Nina Park, under the name Nina Nailed It. I spent a good half hour trolling her account, totally in awe of the art that she was able to pull off.
A couple of months later, Scratch Nail Wraps debuted their collaboration with Nina as part of their June Monthly Mani Box. I already wrote about my love for Scratch about a year ago, so check up on that if you haven’t already. I was excited to see one of my favorite nail wrap companies had teamed up with one of my new favorite nail artists. Serendipity, imo.
Well apparently, everyone else was excited as well, because those babies sold out FAST. Lucky for you (you, but mostly me) Scratch is re-releasing the set just in time for Shark Week! Because if we’re not coordinating our nails to Shark Week, then really, what are we doing with our lives?
I’m not a big nail wrap guy because I'm an elitist and a snob (and because I like to do my own nails) but Scratch wraps are some of my favorites because they’re great to work with. They apply easily, they don’t fray when you file off the excess length, they don’t bubble or peel around the edges, and more important, they look awesome.
You already know how to do this, but just in case: You can start with a bare nail, or paint a base color to match and compliment the nail wraps. I started with a base of nude polish, OPI's "Passion." Since I can't possibly make anything simple for myself, instead of just leaving my nails bare, I painted them to LOOK bare.
You just find the wrap that fits your nail:
And file to fit:
Apply a topcoat to seal everything, and because you should never, ever be without a topcoat. I’d rather go without a condom than a topcoat.
As you can see, Nina’s wraps play with a lot of negative space, allowing your natural nail to show through the clear wrap. I didn’t think I’d be into all of that negative space because if I’m using a nail wrap, why would I want to see my actual nail? Gross. Turns out, I couldn’t stop staring at my nails the entire time I had these on. Just look at how cute they are. The anchors! The little sail boats!
THE SHARKS. I can’t. I truly cannot.
My favorite part of these wraps is that they looked QUALITY. It wasn't obvious that I was wearing a wrap instead of real polish (not that it matters), and it they were so high shine that they ended up looking like actual nail art instead of something that took me less than 10 minutes!
What are your feelings on nail wraps? What are your favorites? SHOW ME WHAT YOU'RE WEARING ON YOUR NAILS IN THE COMMENTS omg I love it when you guys do that.
