OPEN THREAD: Wild Horses Couldn't Drag Me Away... From My Mom
I'm writing this week's Open Thread from a place I've never been before: Louisville, Kentucky! The folks at Longines — the fancy watch brand apparently pronounced like lawn-JEENZ and not LAHN-jih-ness like I'd been saying up until two days ago — made it possible for me to be here for the Kentucky Derby this weekend.
Today is Oaks Day here in Derbyland, and I kind of have no idea what that means. All I know is that I'm supposed to wear a pink dress. Or at least have some pink somewhere on me.
Guys, I don't have, like, anything pink.
So of course, when I realized this a couple days ago, I called my mother in a mild panic.
"I don't want to spend a bunch of money on something pink I'll wear for one day and never again," I lamented.
"Marce," she said calmly. "You have pink lipstick."
Leave it to my mom to state an obvious solution I'd completely overlooked.
I actually give my mom a hard time when she gives me really obvious reminders, like "Don't forget to pay your rent," and "Remember to pack underwear." It turns me right back into an eye-rolling teenager. But in this case, Captain Momvious saved the day! I packed several lipstick options to add some pink to my look so I won't get kicked out of Louisville or whatever happens when you fail to wear pink on Oaks Day.
And Mom: thanks for your sometimes no-duh reminders. I often need them more than I let on. Happy Mother's Day!
For today's Open Thread, y'all, let me know:
- Are you more likely to wear pink in your clothes or in your makeup?
- Do you rely on your mom for the occasional reminder on how to adult?
- How are you spending this weekend?
- What else is on your mind?
