It's gonna get sappy up in here.
I'm really happy that I get to do the weekly beauty news round-up here at xoVain because sometimes, what with all the horrible news constantly surrounding us, it's nice to enjoy some frivolous headlines. That said, we do have some serious beauty news to talk about this week: issues such as body shaming, vegan makeup, and gender norms all made headlines. And of course, we also have to make time to discuss a celebrity's (really pretty) new hair color.
Let's dive in!
Nail-biting may actually have a surprising benefit
According to a study published in the Pediatrics journal, kids who sucked their thumbs or bit their nails were more likely to be resistant to germs. This is based on "hygiene hypothesis," which is the theory that the more exposure you have to bacteria when you're young, the better your immune system will be when you're older.
I don't think this works once you're an adult, however, so if you're still having an issue with the habit you can check out our advice on how to quit biting your nails.
The new Anastasia Beverly Hills ad campaign is awesome
To promote their latest Glow Kit products, Anastasia Beverly Hills launched an ad campaign featuring male models wearing the highlighters. President of the brand, Claudia Soare, told Refinery29: “I wanted the campaign imagery to mimic what the palette represents, which is about being different and creative. There are many misconceptions surrounding men wearing makeup, and these images show that men can look feminine while still portraying their masculinity."
I love this ad campaign not just because of the message behind it but also because damn, these guys look amazing. I'm suffering from extreme skin and bone-structure envy right now (and it definitely makes me want to buy the Glow Kit).Kat Von D is reformulating her entire makeup line
Well, more or less.
Kat Von D recently gave a candid interview to vegan magazine Laika in which she spoke about how her decision to go vegan had a huge impact on the direction of her makeup line. Specifically, she revealed that the entire Kat Von D makeup line is going to become vegan. That means that they're reformulating any products that contain carmine, a pigment from insects, and even going so far as to omit from the line any products that they can't reformulate.
So yeah, your favorite Kat Von D product may be discontinued but hey, maybe they'll replace it with something even better.
I really like Elle Fanning's new hair color
This color is so pretty and suits Elle Fanning perfectly:
According to Fanning's photo caption, this shade is courtesy of celebrity hair stylist Jenda Alcorn at the popular Los Angelos-based Ramirez/Tran Salon — so it wouldn't surprise me if this pastel hair suddenly becomes a trend among young celebs in Hollywood.
Jennifer Aniston speaks out against body-shaming
Jennifer Aniston is fed up with the constant scrutiny that women's bodies are subjected to and I am here for it. In an op-ed penned for The Huffington Post, Aniston wrote: "We are complete with or without a mate, with or without a child. We get to decide for ourselves what is beautiful when it comes to our bodies. That decision is ours and ours alone... I resent being made to feel 'less than' because my body is changing and/or I had a burger for lunch and was photographed from a weird angle and therefore deemed one of two things: 'pregnant' or 'fat.'"
She's completely right, of course. It's hard enough to be a non-famous woman in this world; I can't even imagine what it must be like to have the world constantly debating if you're carrying a baby or just a food baby. I for one am not going to participate in any kind of speculation concerning celebrities' bodies from now on.
Essay question time!
- Were you a nail biter as a kid? Do you think it boosted your immune system?
- Does the Anastasia Beverly Hills ad campaign make you want to buy the Glow Kit?
- How do you feel about the Kat Von D overhaul?
- What do you think about Elle Fanning's new hair color? (It makes me miss my pink hair!)
- Who can relate to Jennifer Aniston's experience with body shaming?
