It's gonna get sappy up in here.
Audrey Hepburn said, “The most important thing is to enjoy your life--to be happy--it's all that matters.” Happiness is a big deal for humans; we all are trying for pleasurable and meaningful lives. And we’ve been chatting about what that means for centuries.
Most recently, a great article in The Atlantic, The Beauty-Happiness Connection, written by Cody C. Delistraty, found that a common thread in three studies to measure happiness had an underlying theme of beauty. The happiness studies reported that when people felt happy, they were also experiencing various forms of beauty.
Basically, the connection between beauty and happiness boils down to these six things.
Environment: People who live on cobblestone streets are apparently super happy.
I do not, however, live around cobblestone streets. Chicago notoriously has more potholes than days of summer, but I do agree you have to look around you and pick out something you find beautiful in your surroundings. Samantha once wrote that setting her lipsticks on her desk to look at made her happy.
Being Intimate: Kissing, being on a date, or looking at a person you find attractive had a very high happiness rating.
I mean, what’s more beautiful than love? Rachel wrote a piece about the best lipsticks for making out--beauty and happiness at its best.
Exercise: People tend to be very happy after a workout.
Endorphins are flowing and stress is actively being relieved, so it makes sense, right? Exercise also implies a healthy body, which is seen as attractive. So get happy. Have you done your desk-ercises today?
Attending The Theater, A Concert, Or Ballet: Taking in an evening of culture, if you will.
I lean toward going to comedy shows, because nothing is more inspiring to me than people who can make others laugh. Maybe your thing is going to Coachella, or seeing a play. Don’t you always feel inspired afterward?
Going To A Museum Or An Art Exhibit: Seeing creativity, emotions, and intelligence is beautiful and inspiring, leading to happiness.
This brings to mind when Hannah saw David Bowie’s art exhibit and was inspired to try new nail art. It's that simple! Paint your nails for happiness!
Creating Something Artistic: People reported feeling happy when they were creating, and what is beauty if not artistic creation?
Like Cher told Christina Aguilera in Burlesque, "When you're putting on your makeup, it's like you're an artist. But instead of painting on a canvas, you're painting on your face."
There’s so much enjoyment to be had from beauty--whether it comes to you by way of a person, a simple tube of lipstick, your surroundings, or an idea. So, take it all in.
