Let’s find your perfect lip so you can look better naked, shall we?

OK, so it’s time to get naked. No, I don’t mean taking off all your clothes (although it is getting a little hot in hurrrrr) but I mean finding your perfect nude lip color.

The nude lips of the 90s are back with a vengeance for fall; it’s time to get your makeup game on and find that naked lip that looks like your own lip color but somehow sends out a siren call of sexy with a shiny, lips-bitten-from-kissing appeal.

The first thing is you have to know the difference between a nude lip and a flesh-toned lip.

A flesh-toned lip is a matte lip color that looks very close to your own skin color. It’s almost like your cheeks sort of melted onto your lip area. This is a throwback to the 90s and a hallmark of the dramatic runway looks that are back with a vengeance.

The best way to achieve this is to just fucking cheat: Use your concealer as lipstick. No, for serious. Make sure your lips are exfoliated, then grab your concealer and swipe it on. You can leave it alone OR you can slick a little gloss on top and bust out of the house. For me, the best-in-class concealer for this or ANY type of activity is Hourglass Hidden Corrective Concealer. Pair this lip with a very dramatic eye and on a night when you’re out with your gals and gays, because it might scare the shit out of your boyfriend.NOW, let’s talk about your perfect nude lip. This is the sexy side of makeup where you’re looking for a slightly enhanced version of your own lip color. Think about how your lips look right after you’ve been kissing for what seems like hours. That heavy make out session color is what you’re going for.

Best way to capture it? Pull down your bottom lip. See that slightly flushed hue? You want to match THAT color, not the current color of your lip. For me, it’s a slightly peachy pink, so my two true, come-hither nudes are NARS lip gloss in Stolen Kisses and Korres Lip Butter Glaze in Laurel.

People are transfixed on my lips when I wear them; they’re the milkshakes that bring all the boys to my yard. I wear them with pretty much anything, but I find particular success when I pair these hues with a smudgy black liner and lush lashes.

Oh, and DO NOT BE ASHAMED to contort your lips at the makeup counter. If people look at you funny, go for broke and peel both lips back. Check your teeth while you’re at it. That’s what they get for being nosy.

Speaking of lips, don’t seal yours: What's your perfect flesh-toned or naked shade?
