The Year of the Highlight isn't over.
I associate red lipsticks with a lot of good things in my life. The first time I met my boyfriend almost three years ago, I was wearing a red lipstick. He was probably looking more at my slutty Halloween costume than my red lips, of course, but I'm pretty sure it helped. I’ve also worn red lipstick to the interviews of the best jobs I’ve gotten so far.
The good thing about red lips is that even though the rest of you may look like you've been in a bear fight and you haven't heard of ironing (I HATE ironing; I buy clothes that don't need ironing), you can still look polished and put together with a perfect red lip.
Without jabbering on too much, here are my absolute favorite reds! Some lipsticks are redder than others, some can just barely qualify as red lipsticks but have the teensiest bit of red in them. But they're all awesome.
Rimmel Lasting Finish Lipstick, Kate Moss Collection, #111
This shade is a true scarlet red on me. Also, I love Rimmel's Kate Moss collection. The colors are beautiful, it's super-pigmented, and for the ridiculously low amount of dough you're forking out, you get a lot of wear.
Word of caution: It stains the lips a little so you might have to use more cleansing oil than usual.
MAC Viva Glam III
MAC describes this lipstick as a brownish-plum, but on me, I classify it as an understated red. It's something I throw on when I need a little color on my face without the fuss of a bright lip color.
MAC Viva Glam I
This was the first bright lip color I bought, and I remember being shocked at how I looked in the mirror. I wasn't sure whether it was a good thing or bad, and I found myself wiping the lipstick off as the day wore on.
I eventually got over it, of course, and I love bright lipsticks more than ever, but I keep going back to this intense brownish-blue-red matte lip color.
Wet n Wild Megalast Lip Color, Stoplight Red
WHO DOESN'T LOVE THIS LIPSTICK, I ASK YOU?!
It has been raved over and over again on xoVain, and at the risk of sounding like I'm addicted and snorting this stuff instead of smearing it on my lips, I'm going to sing its praises about it again.
Stoplight Red is brighter than red on me. It's also probably the brightest red I own, and the brightest I can go without looking clownish.
Unfortunately, in the process of shooting this I dropped it and broke the tube. I'm going to have to suck it up and transfer it into a pot and use a lip brush to put it on until I am back in the States in December. So close but so far, you guys.
NARS Pure Matte Lipstick, Amsterdam
If Amsterdam was a shade of lipstick, this truly would be its color. It's a bold, ultra-matte highly-pigmented medium-dark red with burgundy-brown undertones. On me, it's a subtler red and I appreciate it on days when I have no time for high-maintenance lip colors. I only wish I discovered this before I went to Amsterdam so I can actually wear the shade in the city.
NARS Satin Lip Pencil, Palais Royal
My latest lip color acquisition to add to my already-ridiculous collection is this beautiful lip pencil. All you need is a single glide of this stuff on your lips and they'll be drenched in color and moisture at the same time. It's described as the color of sangria, and if you make your sangria right, it should be the exact shade. The color is a dark berry red, and there's a slight translucency in the shade, but it's easily built up if you applied another layer.
There are two gripes about this product, though: In my haste, I accidentally squished the color bit of the pencil trying to put the cap on and lost a whole chunk of the color. Plus, it's not self-sharpening. God, I've become so lazy, haven't I?
Here are the swatches for all the six shades on the inside of my arm, and under natural light:

I know Ruby Woo and Russian Red are definitely your favorites, but what other red lipsticks are up your sleeve? And when do you have them on? Special occasions or are you an everyday red lip kinda girl?
