NYX Gets Wicked With 12 New Lippies

Yes, metallic purple lipstick can be wearable.

As you may know, I love a bold lip color. But lately I’ve been experimenting with less traditional shades, so I was super excited to hear about the new Wicked Lippies set from NYX.

They were kind enough to send me all 12 of the shades. Some are duds, some are kind of so-so, and some are total winners.

These Four Were Duds

Stone Cold: This frosted silver shade was pretty patchy and even felt a bit gritty on the lips. It took me quite a few passes to get it to really appear well and it was still uneven. Additionally, it left quite a bit of glitter residue on my lips upon removal.

Scandalous: The formula on this one was smoother than Stone Cold, albeit a bit slippery, but I just wasn’t a fan of this shade on my face. It packs some powerful pigment, and it doesn’t take much to get to full opacity, so check this out if you are into aqua lip colors.

Trickery: This olive shade just washed me out. I think it would be lovely on someone with a darker skin tone especially, but it made me look a bit sickly. In terms of formula, this one had a pretty good consistency and was fully pigmented on the first pass across my lips.

Mischievous: I wanted to like this so badly, especially after Zoe’s article on gold lips, but it was too brash on my face. I also noticed that its consistency was gritty, just like Stone Cold, making it a bit difficult to apply evenly.

I'm Not Sure About These Two Yet

Cold Hearted: I’m really on the fence about this shade, a cool steel gray. I definitely love the consistency as it is smooth, creamy, very opaque, and easy to apply. I’m just not sold on this color for my lips.

Risqué: While this is not a shade I’m going to be wearing to my day job, I definitely love the formula; it is quite smooth and opaque, and it was one of the easier shades to apply. It’s out of my comfort zone, but it is a lovely shade of emerald.

The Middle of the Pack

Envy: I’ve always wanted to get into the blue lip trend, but I’ve been too intimidated. I found myself actually really liking this vibrant sapphire shade. The only thing I didn’t like about this one was that it seemed a bit slippery, so I have a feeling it might not stay put too well.

The Four Winners

Sinful: This is another deep blue, and there is something about it that I keep coming back to. I really think the color stands out in a good way. This was a creamier formula than Envy that wore very consistently.

Immortal: I love purple lipstick, so it should come as no surprise that I was totally into this deep indigo shade. This was one of the creamiest and most pigmented of all the Wicked Lippies I tried. It went on smoothly with no problems.

Betrayal: Another gorgeous deep purple shade, this lipstick is my second favorite of the bunch. As with the last Lippie, it is very opaque, albeit a little less smooth (it has glitter in it).

Power: I was fully prepared to dislike this one (I mean, frosted purple?) but I actually really dig it. There's just enough depth to it to make it a pretty wearable frosted shade. The consistency is mostly smooth with a slight snag to it (presumably from the glitter flecks), but I didn’t find it difficult to apply or to get to full opacity.

The End-All And Be-All

Wrath: How do I love thee? Let me count the ways… When I picked this up I thought I would hate it because it just seemed so bronze and reminded me of the first lipstick my mother ever gave me (a frosty brown from Avon--sorry Mom, I will love you always but I couldn’t get down with the frosty brown). Bronze it is, but something about how deep this bronze is made it the most wearable of the bunch. I wore it for three days straight to work and got so many compliments. (My coworker even tried to snatch it.)

  • Have any of you tried any of these? What did you think?
