A Brown Girl’s Guide To No-Makeup Makeup

The no-makeup makeup look everybody loves, this time, for darker-skinned girls!

I probably don’t have to say this, but I love my bold lip colours. Occasionally, whether it’s due to professional or personal reasons, I have to tone down my makeup to be a little bit more subtle. I don’t mind it of course; a makeup shake-up once in a while is always good, especially so you don’t get bored of doing the same thing over and over again to your face.

So I thought I'd share with you how I achieve my no-makeup makeup look.

Here’s my bare face post skincare regimen. I start with priming my whole face with the Alison Raffaele Face Forward Primer. It makes my skin look incredibly dewy. I then put on my favourite sunscreen.

I tend to pump some liquid foundation on the back of my hand (I use Face Atelier’s Ultra Foundation in Zero Plus) and use a damp BeautyBlender sponge to apply foundation all over my face.

I don’t apply foundation on my neck because I get eczema on my neck. I usually just apply sunscreen and moisturiser on my neck, never any makeup.

At this point, I apply a disgustingly excessive amount of Dr. Lipp lip balm on my lips. I do this no matter what I’m doing to my face, more so if I’m applying a matte lip colour so my lips are hydrated.

Next, concealer. My current favourite concealer is NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer in Amande. I apply concealer under my brow arches as well, particularly when my brows aren’t freshly threaded and there’s regrowth. I need concealer under my eyes, too.

I use NARS Brow Perfector these days for my brows. I fill them in with Suriname before using the NARS Brow Gel in Oural, which is a clear gel to set it and make sure my brows stay fierce all day. I don’t like my brows excessively defined; instead, I keep them as natural-looking as possible.

Curl your lashes and apply mascara. I line the outside of my eyes with a dark brown pencil eyeliner because it’s less harsh than a black liner.

Finally comes the colours. I use my favourite nude lipstick, MAC’s Touch, before applying ILIA Lip Gloss in Love Buzz, so my lips have a tiny touch of pink.

I like cream blushes more than powder, and here, I dabbed MAC’s Glamour Feast Cremeblend Blush which I dab on my cheeks. Remember to start two finger spaces away from your nose - you don’t want to blush all over your face; just where it’s flattering to. I then highlight the top of my cheekbones and my nose bridge with MAC’s Magnetic Appeal Extra Dimension Skin Finish.

And here’s the final look. Now, show me your no-makeup makeup faces!
