I had no idea National Lipstick Day was a thing until last year, when I received a few dozen PR emails informing me that this solemn holy day, on which we remember the sacrifices our lipsticks made for our freedom, was fast approaching on July 29th.

I'm not entirely sure if National Lipstick Day is recognized by Congress—as opposed to being something a beauty publicist made up, assigned an arbitrary date, and watched in waxy, highly pigmented delight as it caught digital fire—but it wouldn't be so unusual. Yesterday was the very actual observance of National Milk Chocolate Day; tomorrow is pretty much officially Cheesecake Day. Today, however, whether or not the government has formally formalized it, is a day to give thanks for the colorful lip prints we leave on our chocolate bars and cheesecakes. (You guys bite directly into whole cheesecakes, right?)

Last year, I asked xoJaners to tell me their favorite-right-now lipsticks; this year, I'm asking xoVainers. Here's what the team shared, starting with me, your favorite professional cheesecake face-diver.

My current favorite: FACE Stockholm Cream Lipstick in Significant

If you know me, you know I lean very, very strongly toward orange-red lipstick. And while I've expanded my color horizons over the last couple of years and have a bevy of orange-red favorites, I keep coming back to FACE Stockholm Lipstick in Significant for its might-actually-be-orange-and-not-so-much-red brightness. It also doesn't hurt that the formula is so damn smooth and comfortable. And if you don't like the color I'm wearing, it comes in 146 other shades. I want to Pokemon the hell out of them and catch 'em all.

Wendy: NARS Audacious Lipstick in Angela

"Throughout the summer, I either wear something really sheer and natural on my lips, or I go with something that packs a lot of punch. I recently picked up NARS Audacious Lipstick in Angela, which is this super-creamy, purple-leaning pink that pops better than Britney Spears. I love how bright it looks against my super-pale skin, too."

Allison: MAC Retro Matte Lipstick in Relentlessly Red

"MAC Relentlessly Red is a pinky-red that I absolutely love during the warmer months because it really brightens up my face, boosts my confidence, and I can literally eat whatever I want because it isn't going anywhere, which gives it major brownie points in my book."

Trista: Rimmel London Lasting Finish by Kate Moss Lipstick in 08

"This is Rimmel Lasting Finish by Kate Moss in 08. A commenter actually suggested it as the perfect rosy-brown shade for everyone. I love the finish, its staying power, and the colour is just perfect. It's matte without being drying, and it fades really gracefully. I wear it more than any other lipstick."

Elizabeth: NYX Extra Creamy Round Lipstick in Thalia

"Thalia by NYX is a great shade for everyday wear and goes with everything ever. It's also super-moisturising and easy to reapply with my phone screen when a mirror isn't around."

Tamara: Colour Pop Lippie Stix in Bichette

"You can't go wrong with a classic red like Bichette, and I love how deep this is without being too dark. It wears really well and feels pretty comfortable on the lips, and the slim crayon format makes it super-easy to apply. Plus, it's only $5!"

Kara: MAC Lipstick in Ruby Woo

"This is a slightly old photo of me and my friend Britt at a wedding. We are both wearing MAC’s Ruby Woo because it is the most 'duh' red lipstick choice in the world: perfect color, stays on for hours, and always looks Marilyn-esque. It doesn’t kiss off on your champagne glass, either, which makes it a go-to choice when you’re a bridesmaid."

Maricar: Giorgio Armani Rouge D’Armani Lipstick in 506

"At $35 a pop, Giorgio Armani Rouge D’Armani Lipstick is pricey, but worth every penny, in my opinion. Shade 506, a rosy-nude lip gel, is everything I want in a lipstick: it’s long-lasting, pigmented in one swipe, and hydrating without being sticky. I swipe it on in the morning and don’t have to worry about it feathering or fading away until after lunch. That’s how good it is."

Danielle: Tatcha Kyoto Red Silk Lipstick

"Tatcha Kyoto Red Silk Lipstick is my favorite lipstick I've ever tried. It pulls pure red on all skin tones, and even though it's pricey—and discontinued, unfortunately—I just love to see how it looks on all my friends. It's not pink, it's matte, and it's extremely universally flattering."

Hannah: NARS Audacious Lipstick in Anita

"NARS Audacious Lipstick in Anita is the perfect rosy nude shade for me; it matches my own lip shade almost perfectly but just gives me a bit more depth. The formula is so creamy and hydrating that I usually use it as a cream blush, too."

Mari: Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in Patina

"Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in Patina is the perfect dusty rose and does what it says on the package: stays all day. I like to trick myself into thinking the color is pretty enough to distract from my slightly shoddy application."

Victoria: Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in Black Cherry

"I've been wearing Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in Black Cherry since I was like 14 years old. I love that it's versatile, and I can use it as a stain or a full coverage lipstick. Also, it's mad cheap and I know I can get it anywhere!"

Samantha: Bésame Cosmetics 1959 Red Hot Red Lipstick

"Bésame's Red Hot Red Lipstick is fairly new to me, but hot damn, is it quickly climbing the ranks of my all time favourite lipsticks! It's right up there with Ruby Woo in both pigment and longevity. This red lasts ALL DAY, and one swipe isn't just a marketing claim—it's actually true. My favourite part? It's THE Marilyn red. I'm not kidding—it's actually the replicated 1959 semi-matte red Marilyn wore all the time. Plus, the packaging is so damn beautiful. Cozies up nicely with my vintage lingerie."

Lauren: NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Train Bleu

"I love how deeply pigmented NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Train Bleu is, and how bold it looks against my skin. I love that it makes my teeth look deceptively white every time I wear it, and I love that it makes me go from 'unassuming, sweet young lady' to 'will likely tear out my throat with her deceptively white-looking teeth should I cross her' within the span of an application. More than that, though, the thing I love most about this lipstick is that it actually smells the way I would expect a deep, rich, black raspberry lipstick to smell: like deep, rich, black raspberries. You'd think that more companies would at least make a passing effort to scent their $25+ dollar lipsticks in something more adventurous than 'vanilla' or 'nothing,' but alas."

Kelly: NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Cruella

"I know I just wrote about NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Cruella literally last week, but I can't stop wearing it. I think it'll be a favorite forever thanks to the perfect true-red color, easy application, length of wear, and creamy consistency."

Christine: NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Dragon Girl

"Hair done, face beat, accessories on, outfit on point; I love wearing red lips because it is the finishing touch to to most of my everyday looks. No matter whether it is day or night, NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Dragon Girl is a classic color that exudes sexiness, confidence and irresistible appeal. I never leave home without it."

Kat: NYX Matte Lipstick in Indie Flick

"I'm not a big lipstick person because I like to snack every two hours. But when I wear it, I like this orangey red NYX Matte Lipstick in Indie Flick because it's bright, wears well, and it makes me feel like a boss."

Rachel: Urban Decay Sheer Revolution Lipstick in Ladyflower

"This summer, my go-to look has become big, curly hair, courtesy of the humidity, glowing skin, courtesy of the 100-degree temperatures, and a sheer, pink lip, courtesy of Urban Decay's Sheer Revolution Lipstick in Ladyflower. I mostly wanted it for the name, because it sounds like a term repressed Protestant girls use to refer to their vaginas, but now I'm obsessed. It's sheer enough to wear when you're going for a 'woke up like this and then made out for an hour' look, but it's also buildable, so you can make it as dramatic as you want. Shea butter, jojoba, olive and babassu oils make this baby suuuuper-moisturizing, which helps defend my lips against the harsh AC of my shitty apartment. I've only had this lipstick two months and it's already almost worn out completely, which is giving me anxiety and I refuse to think about it!"

Aaaaand one more NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil for the road...

Caitlin: NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Sex Machine

"I love the fact that NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil is, in fact, matte, which means it won't create a weird reflection off of my face during lectures in my classroom or during meetings with students. I also love Sex Machine because it is my my-lips-but-better shade, so I can wear it for just about any occasion."

And now, of course, it's your turn. Post a photo of yourself wearing your favorite lipstick and make a legally binding declaration of your love for it!
