I’m Late to the ‘Modern Family’ Party, But That Doesn’t Mean the Characters Can’t Inspire My Makeup

It's weird, like a woman with olive skin trying to pull off red hair-weird

I watch a lot of TV shows — basically anything that moves and has actors is my thing. My main thing is sitcoms, my favorite being The Office (I rewatch it at least once a year). I never really got into Modern Family, though — until now.

Suddenly I fell in a deep Modern Family hole on Netflix, and I feel more connected to my new TV family than to my own family. I'm not even afraid to admit this. My favorite characters are Phil and Gloria, but I also love Haley's insights, and I relate to her way too much.

Modern Family has four main makeup-wearing characters: Haley, Alex, Claire and Gloria. All of them have their own signature looks, and today, I'm interpreting them for myself. I mean, sometimes Cam or Fitzbo wears makeup, too, but I wasn't really feeling a clown look. Maybe another time (never).

The oldest daughter of the Dunphy family is the most fashionable one. Being a semi-succesful blogger you'd think her look is very Instagram. It isn't, which is quite refreshing.

Haley always accentuates her big eyes and her dark eyebrows. I applied a small amount of CC cream to keep my skin looking fresh. On my cheeks I applied Milani Rose D'Oro Baked Blush. On the eyes, I applied my Maybelline Eye Studio Lasting Drama Gel Liner on the outer half of my top lid and my bottom waterline. I blended that out with my Zoeva tiny blending brush to create a more smudged grunge effect. I mixed my NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream in Cannes and my ColourPop Liquid Lipstick in Stingraye for a Haley-esque lip color.

Since I never apply black all around my eyes I felt quite uncomfortable wearing this look. To put it in Haley's words: "It's weird, like a woman with olive skin trying to pull off red hair-weird"

Alex is probably the character I relate to the least; she doesn't really care about her looks, and she puts school before everything. I am more of a Haley. However, now that I'm a busy student again, I'm more similar to Alex than I'd like to admit.

Alex may look like she doesn't wear makeup, but the girl always has perfect porcelain skin. I applied my MAC Studio Waterweight Foundation with my beautyblender for a luminous coverage. I set it with a powder with a slight tint for an even more perfected effect. On the cheeks I applied a tiny bit of my MUA blush in Spry.

Alex also has quite dark eyebrows, so I filled mine is as usual with my Make Up For Ever Aqua Brow. On the eyes, I only applied mascara and then put on my glasses. On the lips, I wore a simple lip gloss, NYX Butter Gloss in Tiramisu. It is one of the very few lip glosses I own and like.

I'm always surprised how a permanently busy and stressed character like Claire has time to do a heavy smoky eye, but it's what she does.

Claire's skin is always luminous and even. I applied my Maybelline Dream Fresh BB with a dense brush for a fuller coverage. Claire is not about contouring or highlighting, but boy does she like blush! I generously applied a dusty pink blush from my Makeup Revolution blush palette. On the eyes, I created a cool-toned smoky eye using my Naked2 palette. Claire usually wears something neutral yet visible on her lips, so I opted for my NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream in London.

Gloria is one of my favorites. She's so smart and funny and glamorous, and I love how her relationship with Jay is basically based on hating the same things. I relate to that.

For my base I opted for my Maybelline BB cream again and I concealed any imperfections with my Kryolan Dermacolor Camouflage Creme concealer. Gloria is the only one who has some sort of contour going on, so I accentuated the higher points of my face with a lighter concealer and the darker points of my face with a darker concealer. I blended that all out with my fingers.

Gloria, like all other ladies on the show, wears a lot of blush. For this look, I opted for a darker coral blush in my Makeup Revolution blush palette. Her eyes are always very sultry, so I applied a matte sand color all over the lid and blended that into my crease.

Around the eyes, I applied a black eyeshadow and blended that out a lot, to avoid any harsh black lines. On the lips I opted for Topshop Beauty Lips in Beguiled because Gloria often wears berry-colored lipsticks.
