Since I'm a visual person I hardly ever remember the album title but I just remember what the album art looks like.
Blue is my favourite colour. It reminds me of many of my favourite things--the ocean, Paul Newman's eyes, the night sky, my birthstone, Yves Klein, the perfect pair of jeans, sour freezies... you get the idea.
So it's kind of weird that. most of the time, my makeup leans towards the neutral side. Browns, grays and golds tend to be the only shades of eyeshadow I let grace my lids.
For a long time I eschewed blue shadow because it felt a bit too tacky, a bit too Tammy Faye (but is that really a bad thing?) However, experimentation with beauty products is part of my job and so I've been branching out, sweeping all shades of cobalt, cyan and ultramarine around my eyes.
And it looks hot, in my opinion. I'm starting to think various shades of blue are now a neutral. But you don't have to take my word for it. I've got pictures.
THE BLUE SMOKY EYE
First up, the blue smoky eye, which is the more subtle of the two looks I'm featuring. A sapphire smoky eye has something very early '70s groupie about it. Like some kind of witchy lady in a long lacy dress and loads of jewelry with midnight blue smoked out around her eyes. It's super-dreamy.
I smudged my entire upper lashline and the outer two-thirds of my lower lashline (including the waterline) with Sephora Collection Nano Eyeliner in Azur Blue, a cool, mid-toned matte blue.
Then I used a loose fluffy brush to smudge OCC Loose Colour Concentrate in Distortion over my entire lid and up into the crease. I love this OCC shade, it's a murky navy with a hint of shimmer. So babely.
THE BLUE CAT EYE
A solid matte, black cat eye is a classic, OBVIOUSLY. I'm not going to argue with that. But a cobalt cat eye looks so clean and futuristic and beautiful that I think it's time it also becomes a classic, and this shade really makes a statement so that you can leave the rest of your face pretty bare. And with getting this look costing you less than $5, you can't really go wrong.
I used NYX Studio Liner in Extreme Blue, a bright cobalt. I just ran the colour along my upper lashline and then gently winged it out with a slight turn of my wrist. Then I kept adding teensy strokes on to the wing to create a nice thick cat eye. Crisp colour with a slight sheen. Killer.
Now, what's your favourite colour? Or can we just talk about Paul Newman? Because ... yeah.
