Just more proof that I was right about this pastel highlighting trend, and that yes, I am an oracle.
I’ve always avoided using cream eyeshadow formulas because, even with primer, my shadow can sometimes still become a mess by the end of the day.
Luckily, writing for xoVain has exposed me to many different options in the world of cream shadows via reviews from other writers and commenter recommendations. After trying a few different formulas, here are the best cream shadows I’ve found for those of us with that eyelid grease.
Best on a BudgetCoverGirl Bombshell Shineshadow
I love these little tubes of cream shadow because they travel well and the littlest bit goes a long way. I can use just a tiny amount (I don’t even really have to squeeze the tube that hard) and the product covers my whole lid with well-pigmented shadow. I was nervous these were going to be too glossy or shimmery but they give off a nice, non-chunky sheen.
The best part, of course, is that they stay put most of the day without smearing or smudging.
I can’t even believe how cheap these are ($3!) because they live up to their long-lasting claim. These cream shadows have a mousse-like texture that makes them easy to blend.
The darker colors seem to show up better than the lighter ones, and these are definitely shimmery, but I am a big fan of how well they hold up.
Best for Classic NeutralsBobbi Brown Long-Wear Cream Shadow
Sometimes, with more neutral cream shadows, I find that lighter colors don’t hold up as well for some reason. With these Bobbi Brown cream shadows, though, I don’t run into that problem. There are some darker shades as well, but I’m a fan of how beautifully the neutral shades blend out. Pigmentation is nice as well without being heavily saturated.
Best as an Eyeshadow BaseMAC Pro Longwear Paint Pot
I’ve worn MAC paint pots alone before, and they hold up pretty well, but I love to wear them especially as a base for eyeshadow looks. I think they give my shadow a nice surface to adhere to, and they really amplify the look. That said, I do still wear them as stand-alone shadows and don’t find I get any creasing until they’ve been on for about six hours or so (even then, it’s minimal).
Best for Bright LooksMake Up For Ever Aqua Cream Waterproof Cream Color
It shouldn’t be surprising that MUFE makes the list — they are consistent in quality across the board. I really love these Aqua Cream shadows because they do not budge one bit, and I can actually wear them without primer underneath.
These set very quickly, so it’s important to smooth them on and blend them out as quickly as possible, but that quick-set is what gives them their staying power.
Best For Treating YourselfGiorgio Armani Eye Tint
I wrote about these eye tints back in March, and I still love them. I reserve some of the shades for special looks, but there are a couple that I keep in heavy rotation. These are not cheap, but I loved the ones they sent me to review so much that I bought a couple more myself.
I think the pigmentation is beautiful on these and they're perfect for days when I don’t have a lot of time to get ready but want my eyes to pop.
They apply well, blend like a dream, and set to a beautiful powder finish. Over primer, these stay looking fresh all day, and without primer, they fade slightly but still don’t crease.
