I Tested L'Oreal's New 24-Hour Foundation and Setting Spray While Bartending All Night

A good foundation is like a good boyfriend, in that it will do exactly what you want it to while you forget about it completely.

I don’t often wear foundation because most of the time, I find it too temperamental and I just don't have the patience. If I’m going to put something on my face, I don’t want to have to worry about it wearing away halfway through the night, and I’m certainly not going to carry the product around with me to touch it up because I’ll probably be too drunk to do so anyway.

My bottom line is if I’m going to put something on my face, I need to know that I can forget about it and it’s not going to budge. A good foundation is like a good boyfriend, in that it will do exactly what you want it to while you forget about it completely.

I don’t think I’m encountering anything more or less than the normal person would throughout their day, so if the foundation doesn't hold up during my normal day, why would it work for anyone else? It’s not like I’m putting on makeup and then like, riding dirt bikes or something. The extent of anything physically strenuous I encounter on a daily basis tops out at hot yoga or like, carrying four bottles of Jameson up a flight of stairs.

I’m always a little bit wary when it comes to “stay all day” products, since everyone’s "day" is different. Not everyone’s day lasts a mere eight to 12 hours. Some people’s days are nights. And yo, if your foundation says it can last a full 24 hours, you can bet that there are some of us out here who are going to put that to the test.

Have I taken long enough to get to my point, or should I keep rambling?

Have you guys seen this L’Oreal Infallible Pro-Matte Foundation? It’s making some big claims. It’s out here saying that it’s got the look of long wear, an air-light texture, and a flawless, demi-matte finish. All that from a drugstore foundation for $12.99? There’s also an accompanying setting spray sold alongside it, the Infallible Pro-Spray & Set Makeup Extender Setting Spray, $16.99, to really help lock down the foundation.

I love a drugstore product, you know that, but, I’m a foundation snob. Actually, I’m just an all-around snob, but you knew that, too. I don’t even really like wearing foundation, but if I’m going to wear it, I need it to stay where I put it, I need it to feel good, and I need it to look like I’m not wearing anything at all.

I often find that drugstore foundations don’t give me quite enough coverage where I need it, or won’t buff out to look natural in places where I don’t. I don’t know, I have a lot of foundations from the drugstore, but I never actually use one of them when I need to use a foundation. To me, the mark of a good product is one that I reach for without thinking about it, and apparently, none of my drugstore foundations fit the bill. Know what I mean?

Anyway, I love a new product and I was curious to see if the Infallible Pro-Matte would actually live up to its claims. I put it on over a couple of days that ended in nights of me bar tending or ~going out~, because if a foundation can last through a night behind the bar, then that shit is truly bomb-proof.

So here are the "before" photos that could also double as mugshots.

The foundation that most closely matched my skin was 101 Classic Ivory. I dotted it around my face, then buffed it in a few times with my Beauty Blender and a few times with IT Cosmetic’s new foundation brushes.

At first, I was surprised by how much coverage you’re able to achieve with just a bit of the product. It’s very creamy and moves around your face to smoothly to blend down just where you need it to be. I found myself blending the foundation out more than I did trying to build it up in places I needed coverage, so it didn’t leave me feeling like I was wearing too much, and I felt like my normal skin was still showing through, so my face didn't look caked with makeup, one uniform color, or flat.

Even though I had full, even coverage, I felt like I was just wearing at thin veil of makeup. I also noticed that I was able to get away with not wearing any concealer to hide dark circles or this weird patch of skin that refuses to cooperate lately. I hit it with the setting spray and went on my way.

The spray wears as well as the foundation does, and leaves your skin feeling naked to the touch instead of dry or tight. The foundation as well as the spray both deliver on their matte finish promise, without leaving your skin too matte where it doesn’t reflect any light at all and ends up looking weird and unnatural. It’s matte while catching the light like your natural skin would, but better. Think “healthy baby.”

It’s the weirdest thing, you guys, this product actually does what it says. The entire night(s), the foundation stayed where I put it, and didn’t smudge or streak when I rubbed my eyes, wiped whiskey from my mouth, or sexily pushed the hair out of my eyes while discreetly trying to make this dude fall in love with me from across the bar/ignoring him. It stayed through all that!

I have the “after” pictures to show you, but since all of my afters had to be taken after a full day of wear, I couldn't shoot them in natural light. Here’s the best I could come up with at 4 a.m. Forgive the yellow lights in my apartment, which has the lighting of a truck stop.

My skin looks waaay better than it normally does after a night at work, even compounded by fatigue and alcohol which are both obviously great for your skin. At the very least, it's still noticeably matte, instead of shiny from a night of standing over steaming hot glassware, sinks of hot water, and sweating behind the bar.

The foundation and setting spray are a great team, and when used together, your makeup isn’t going anywhere. I should mention that you don’t necessarily need the setting spray to make the foundation wear well and last all day, it does that pretty well on its own. (I know this because I forgot to use the spray a couple of times before I ran out the door.) This isn’t one of those product duos where one won’t work without the other, but they do work best as a pair.

So it SEEMS that Infallible Pro-Matte is my new, well, my first, favorite drugstore foundation. It really came through with the stay power no matter what I put it up against. And a bonus: The foundation tube is small, plastic, and ultra-portable, so you can throw it in your bag and take it with you, not that you'll need to touch it up. But not all foundations travel well, which gives me anxiety.

Have you guys checked out L'Oreal's Infallible Pro-Matte yet? What are your favorite drugstore foundations? And what are you favorite stay-all-day beauty products? Are you tired of looking at close-ups of my face? Me too. Don't worry, I've got some cooler shit on the way.
