I Pledge Allegiance to Wine Red Lipstick

I’ve found my beauty “thing” and I’m sticking with it.

Everyone has that beauty product that seriously changes their mojo, that once they find it and someone gives them a big compliment, they work it forever even when it’s not in style (see: skunk-stripe highlights, blue eyeshadow and French pedicures.) While I can’t say that I’ve ever embraced any of these, one of my favorite beauty items EVER is back for fall and I have decided that it’s my beauty sticking point: I hereby pledge allegiance to wine-red lipstick.

I have Drew Barrymore to blame for this intense madness. I spotted this hue on Drew in a photo from the late 90s, back when Chanel Vamp was all the rage, and I lost my mind. I wore it on my lips, I wore it on my nails, and I rocked that color TO DEATH. My inner Goth not satisfied; I decided that Vamp was a touch too purple, that I wanted something with more of a dramatic blood/pinot noir touch. Which is when I stumbled into a Sephora in Las Vegas one afternoon and discovered MY JAM: NARS Cosmetics Lipstick in Fire Down Below. It’s a sanguine pinot noir color that has a fiery touch to it. It’s magic on my mouth. It’s a homing signal to my lips. I get more dudes checking out my mouth when I wear it and I have women asking me what I’m wearing. In short, it’s my Hotness Color and I will be purchasing tubes of it in bulk.

I’ve had three particularly successful hookups with this lipstick. I had a crazy house party experience in my apartment building where I finally managed to get my neighbor’s friend to crash in my apartment after a party. For three days. We sent out for pizza. Then there was the ex-boyfriend who flew back from London early because he said he was dreaming of my mouth and that “damned red lipstick.” I had fun making sure that ticket was a wise investment on both our parts. Finally, there’s a whole relationship where I used to leave notes with lip marks in this lipstick everywhere for a long-time love. We didn’t make it, but the lipstick and I are still going strong.

There are other lip products in this color that are quite magical if you want to join me. Hourglass Cosmetics makes the mind-blowing Femme Rouge Velvet Lipstick in Icon that is a red carpet-worthy wine red. Then there are some seriously fab drugstore brand options. I would RUN, not walk, to your local big box retailer or drugstore to check out CoverGirl LipPerfection lipstick in Everlasting, L’Oreal ColourRiche Lipcolour in Pure Burgundy. For those who are particular about their lip products and want a super healthy option, check out Bite Beauty Luminous Crème Lipstick in Mulberry. It’s a line that’s created without parabens, sulfates, synthetic fragrances or dyes, petrochemicals, phthalates, GMOs or Triclosan. Meaning that if you consume it, it shall basically do no harm.

Or you could just stain your lips with red wine. Like, a lot of it. Which is totally your choice, but since I can’t stay loaded on account of beauty all day long, this is the best option for me. I’ve found my beauty “thing” and I’m sticking with it.
