But it’s imperative that we are committed to our SPFs, is it not?

SUMMER IS HERE! Well, almost, but it’s finally warm!

After all of the whining I’ve done these past few months about wanting the weather to warm up, I am more than ready to enjoy some sweltering heat. Saturday morning, as I was in bed -- which isn’t so much of a “bed” as it is a giant pile of hundred dollar bills that I sleep on -- I checked the weather on my phone. 80 degrees! YAAAS!

I immediately ran downstairs, kicked down my front door, tore the screen door off of its hinges, dived onto the warm, green grass and enjoyed the sun.

One of the few downsides to enjoying the heat is the inevitable BURN. I always say to myself, “I don’t need to wear sunscreen, I’m Italian!” NO, I’m pasty.

And even when I DO decide to wear protection (heh), I always screw it up somehow and still end up with an uneven and unsightly burn. Whether I deserve it or not, I always start the summer with a wicked sunburn, forcing everyone to stay at least four feet away from me at all times for fear of someone touching my burned skin.

I’ve already explained that I hate wearing lotion, and it’s even worse with sunscreen. It just makes my skin feel all tight and carpet-y, clammy and disgusting. I know I should be more concerned with protecting myself against the numerous long term effects of sun damage, but when I’m smeared head to toe with sunblock, it’s like my skin tightens up and I feel like a little beetle just molting and molting and molting.

But it’s imperative that we are committed to our SPFs, is it not? Real talk for a minute, I’m actually super scared of the possibility of getting melanoma because I have scars from previous sunburns. Scars!

You know how some of you say that when you spend time in the sun, your freckles become visible? Well, same, except with sunburn scars. So, let’s protect ourselves!

There’s a new sunscreen that I am thanking the good LORD for because it feels just like a regular lotion and not like a grimy sunscreen.

Banana Boat Protect and Hydrate Sunscreen

This little dream is a lightweight 2-in-1 that combines sunscreen with aloe and antioxidants to maintain 100% of your skin’s natural moisture while you’re out bombing around outside. Best of all, you won’t feel like you’re wearing sunscreen at all. No sticky feeling, no crustiness, and it won’t flake off or make you feel like your skin is pulled too tight. I love it because it sinks right into your skin and you can forget all about it (but don’t forget to reapply).

How about some protection for that gorgeous face of yours?

One of the many things I’ve learned since I started reading xoJane is that you really can’t mess around when it comes to sun protection for your face. A layer of sunscreen before you apply makeup is essential for healthy skin. I know that not everyone loves the idea of applying sunscreen to your face every single day, but stay with me. I can understand if you’re hesitant about slapping on your run of the mill, tropical smelling sun block, so why don’t you give this a try:

Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunblock

Don’t be fooled by the “ultra sheer” part of the name, this sunblock brings heavy-duty protection from damaging UV rays. You can grab it with SPF levels of 30, 70, and even 100+, so if you just need a little casual protection for an afternoon picnic or you’re doing the Harlem Shake on the surface of the sun, Neutrogena has got you covered. The lightweight formula dries to a clean, non-oily, matte finish, which works as a nice base for the rest of your beauty regime.

Listen, I know that we all love our BB Creams because they’re *~*So GrEaT*~* and they contain SPF, but the reality is that they’re not always going to give you adequate protection. All of the things we love about our BB Creams are exactly what make them fall short of real protection from the sun. They’re great for evening skin tone and covering minor imperfections, but the coverage is so sheer and minimal that their SPF alone cannot be relied on.

Also, though they contain an SPF, most of them do not block the harmful and damaging UV rays. I’m not telling you to throw away your favorite BB, baby! Just be aware that you’re gonna need better protection if you’re going to be balling in the sun.

And now for the real star of the show.

I LOVE an illuminator. Illuminators are one of the most versatile yet underrated beauty product, by far (look at me just making all these outrageous claims). Do you own an illuminator? If you don’t, stop what you’re doing and go out and get one.

Do you know what I love even more than an illuminator for the face? An illuminator for the BODY. Illuminating body lotions make everyone look better. Some days I wake up wanting to have a body like Nicole Richie circa 2007, all clavicles and ribs, and some days I want to have a body like Channing Tatum, pecs and arms for days (this message brought to you in part by my body dysmorphic disorder).

My point is, no matter how I want to look on any given day, I will no doubt look even BETTER once I’m wearing an illuminating lotion. Illuminators give you all of the same benefits that you get from tanning, such as definition and glow, without subjecting yourself to all of the dangers of fake baking. Do you love it?

Hawaiian Tropic Shimmer Effect is available in SPF levels of 8, 20, and 40, so you can use it from the beginning of summer when your skin is prone to burning, to the very end when you’ve built up a lot of color and want to lessen your SPF levels and really soak up the sun.

The sunscreen gets its shimmer from mica, which is a mineral found in many beauty products to add shimmer. If you’re rocking this out in the sun all day, you may want to alternate back and forth between Shimmer Effect and a normal boring sunscreen every two hours if you don’t want the mica to build up a whole ton of shimmer. No alternating for me though, I’m fine with glistening as much as possible. Shine bright like a Tynan.

Oh and to be clear, we’re not talking BODY GLITTER effects here, I mean, I’m already gay enough. It’s just a subtle, light reflecting radiance. It looks like your skin but better. Glowier.

Do you hate me for writing about sunscreen? I know it’s not super exciting but, hello, I am trying to PROTECT you. Using my powers for good and not evil.

Does sunscreen make you feel gross? Ooh what ELSE makes you feel gross? I hate standing water. Um, are you into body illuminators? I have like sixty thousand I could tell you about. What is your favorite outdoor activity to do while getting sunburned? Mine is day drinking.

If you need me, I’ll be hanging out with all of these angels.
