It's gonna get sappy up in here.
I was digging though my makeup bag the other day and I noticed that I didn’t have a single proper lipstick in there -– it was filled with all kinds of alternate forms of lip color (Sorry, Emma, but I’m still carrying around a jam-packed cosmetics case). Inside my pouch, I had my favorite Korres Mango Lip Butter, a couple of Bite Beauty matte lip crayons and two MAC Patent Polish Lip Pencils ($20), which I have been using the hell out of since I got my hands on them.
Guys, these new glossy pencils are perfection. They don't flake on your lips, the color is super-pigmented and they give the right amount of shine. If they were the only glossy pencils I had to use for the rest of my life, I would be 100% OK with that. And I know for a fact this product is special because even Rebecca Carroll is into them. Now you guys know Rebecca as our brilliant, outspoken managing editor, but what you don’t know is that she is EXTREMELY picky about makeup. Most days, she doesn’t wear much -- if any -- makeup at all, not that she needs it. But not long after I started at xoJane, she expressed to me her desire to find a great everyday lip color. Naturally, I became fixated on finding her one. Because no woman should be deprived of her perfect lip color, dammit!
However, I quickly learned that this woman won’t just put on any old thing you give her. Oh no. She has pooh-poohed every lipstick, gloss or what have you that I’ve shown her except for one: Yep, you guessed it, MAC Patent Polish. We have a winner, ladies and gentlemen!
When I got the MAC lip pencils, I loved them so much that I gave a few to Emily (the only person who hoards more lip pencils than I do) and one to RC, who was very skeptical at first. The coral/orange-y shade she’s been wearing is called Teen Dream and it looks so pretty on her. The funny thing is, I think it’s one of the most natural-looking colors in the line; she thinks it’s intensely bright. When she applies it at her desk, I have to bully her into adding more. “Put it on like you mean it!” I barked at her recently when she gently dabbed it onto her lips and showed it to Emily and I for inspection. I can be really pushy when it comes to helping people break out of their makeup comfort zone. Plus, I am the oldest child in my family, so bossiness comes natural to me. Just ask my sisters.
I knew I finally wore Rebecca down when she posted this onto her Facebook page:
Victory! YEAH! Can you see me? I’m doing one of those silly dances football players do (but aren't supposed to) after they make a touchdown. The bottom-line is if these pencils can please a picky makeup person like Rebecca, you KNOW they are pretty darn good. BTW, I’m wearing Patent Polish in Pleasant in the photo above and I also have Hopelessly Devoted, a bright pink shade, in heavy rotation. And Ms. McCombs is loving the shade Fearless. What do you think -- will you try it?
And if there’s a lesson to be learned here, it’s this: Don’t tell me that you’re afraid to try some beauty thing because I will eventually coerce you into trying said thing. You better stop playing!
