Oh, don't pretend like you don't have one!
Last August, I went home to Vancouver for a family emergency
and spent a lot of time by the ocean, either swimming, tanning, or
just thinking and throwing a stick into the water for the family dog. The ocean
brought me a lot of serenity and made me feel truly grounded, safe, and at
It was around that time that I decided I might be a mermaid.
It sounds silly, but I really do have a lot of mermaid
qualities! I always feel drawn to the ocean and adore swimming more than
almost anything else; I feel nauseous when I think of beautiful creatures like
whales and dolphins being harmed or kept in captivity, and I have a strong,
intense desire to learn how to sail so I can leave the land behind for a couple
For now, though, it’s still winter, I don’t know how to
sail, and I live nowhere near the ocean.
All I can really do to satisfy my
mermaid feelings is share petitions about saving killer whales, dye my hair
mint green, wear glittery star headbands, and covet all my favourite mermaid-inspired
products. There are quite a few, but
I’ve compiled a shortlist for all you sea witches and merpeople:
Ilia Tinted Lip Conditioner in Shell Shock
I’m not much of a lipstick fan--I find I always
have super-chapped lips after I apply a colour--but Ilia’s Tinted Lip Conditioners are a total dream! More lip balm than lipstick, Shell Shock gives
my lips a perfect beachy pink stain that I can’t get enough of, all while
moisturizing them with soothing ingredients like jojoba oil and cocoa butter.
Deborah Lippmann Nail Color in Mermaid’s Dream
I’ve always loved this nail polish, even before it matched my hair. It's a perfect mint shade, with tiny specks of gold and
blue glitter confetti.
Mermaid Hair Shampoo and Conditioner
I just couldn’t resist the delicious
scent and cute packaging of this combo. All-natural and cruelty-free, this shampoo and conditioner pair smell like orange blossom,
coconut, and the seaside. I was a bit worried because
my poor bleached hair needs extra-special treatment, but they left my hair feeling soft and silky, and smelling delicious.
Captain Blankenship Dry Shampoo
I love finding new indie, small-batch brands to try out. Captain Blankenship is an all-natural brand based out
of the Hudson River Valley, and the products are made with organic
ingredients and a bit of ocean breeze magic.
One of my favourite products so
far is the Days at Sea dry shampoo, a hair powder with a soft rose geranium
scent that I just can’t get enough of. I avoid washing my hair as much as
possible because it’s so frail, so a great dry shampoo is always high on my
list. This product gives me great texture and volume, and eliminates all
the greasy bits.
Urban Decay Heavy Metal Glitter Liner in Distortion
I adore all of Urban Decay’s Heavy Metal liners, but Distortion is by far my favourite. An iridescent white glitter with hints of
blue, pink, and purple, this glittery liquid is perfect for lining lower
lashes, creating a glitter cat eye, adding bits of glitter to the tips of your eyelashes,
or even covering your cheekbones with subtle hints of glitter magic.
Manic Panic in Atomic Turquoise and Electric Lizard
I couldn’t bring myself to leave the products responsible for
my new mermaid hair out of this list. I used a combination of white
conditioner, a lot of Atomic Turquoise and a bit of Electric Lizard green,
mixed it all together, and mushed it all over my head for half an hour.
result was a totally perfect minty dream, with tiny hints of Davines Mother of
Pearl still in tact for extra mermaid points.
Are there any other mermaid-inspired products I need to know about?
