Oh, don't pretend like you don't have one!
Last night, I got to see Erykah Badu perform at Radio City Music Hall. She was the guest of Dave Chappelle, who ended his 10-show run there. Or at least, that was supposed to be the last show: He announced that he was going to do one more, tonight. It was, to be the queen of understatement, a very, very good night. We were even sent on our way with a free T-shirt, designed by Obey, to commemorate it; the back says, "I WAS THERE."
Erykah Badu was on my live-performance bucket list. I have no good explanation for why it's taken me this long to see her, considering I'm a huge fan. Maybe I was worried that she wouldn't live up to the hype in my head. I mean, her Live album? It's easily one of the best live albums of all time. I needn't have worried. Both she (and Chappelle) brought down the house. She even played "Tyrone"!
When people ask me who my beauty inspirations are, they're pretty much all female musicians: Justine Frischmann, Jody Watley, Alison Mosshart, Beyoncé, Kathleen Hanna, and Ms. Badu. She is a vision. If I look half that good in my mid-40s, maybe I will quit my job and become a catalogue model, for like, Chicos or something.
