Open Thread: Never Say Never

I was wrong about these beauty products. And I’m grown enough to admit it.

I’m going to tell you a secret: I’m not the world’s most adventurous beauty editor. Yes, I’ve tried a ton of things and know a lot of stuff, but at this stage, I pretty much stick to what I know works on me and don't play around with what doesn’t.

There are a few products, however, that, for whatever reason, I once deemed “NOT NOW, NOT EVER.” Fortunately, time and testing proved me wrong.

Patchouli Fragrances

This one is understandable. It wasn’t until I became a beauty editor that I had access to legitimately good patchouli. Now, it’s one of my favorite fragrance notes--I probably wear a patchouli-based scent five out of seven days in a week. My new favorite is Tom Ford Patchouli Absolu. Unlike some of his other patchouli scents, this one is pretty much all freaky funk (which I like), no big floral elements.

For the longest time, I was anti-self-tanner because I hadn’t yet seen formula that looked as realistic as the real thing. They were all too orange, too dark, or too stinky. But ingredient technology has cancelled out a lot of those gripes; these days, self-tanners are almost impossible to detect (if they’re applied correctly). I like Kiehl’s Sun-Free Self-Tanning Formula. It’s basically idiot-proof, looks totally normal, and smells pretty good.

Many people have mixed results with this supplement, but I can’t say enough about how well it’s worked for me. I started taking it back in January because my hair and nails were feeling a little thin. Now, nearly a year later, my nails are crazy-strong (and growing like gangbusters; I feel like I’m filing them all the time) and I’ve definitely noticed regrowth in my hair. (When I get it blown out, it’s extra obvious because I have something like two-inches of new growth all around that needs to be tamped down with product, or else it looks like I stuck my finger in a light socket.)

  • What beauty products have you been wrong about?
  • Any product that you will just NEVER try?
  • Anything you want to try but have been reluctant to take the plunge?
